Weather Watchers
Related: About this forumThis is why you need to go inside a sturdy building when lightning is within 10 miles of you.
Caution: some hit people, but they all survived. I'm glad the dogs didn't get shocked.

(219 posts)Our frame home had been hit TWICE by lightning in the 23 years we've lived here. The last time it zapped every electric device in the house, including our Chevy Volt that was plugged in.
Fortunately, we never had a fire as a result of the strikes. We're the 2nd highest home in the neighborhood, so maybe that's why we attract the bolts

(23,225 posts)Knocked me off my feet, ears are still ringing. Blurred my vision for several hours, my friend had to drive us home. This why I don't play the lottery.
Have also had home electronics fried. At least three modems, a floppy drive (when those were ESSENTIAL!) and pair of memory chips.

(51,590 posts)in San Diego and all the trees were quickly on fire. Scientists said that the unusual thunder and lightening in Southern CA was a result of Climate Change.
When I read stories to my 1st Graders I read the Little House books to my class. In one story a person was struck by lightening out on the prairie. It killed several people and this particular man was unconscious for days. When he awoke and saw the picket watch he had on him when he was hit he couldn't believe he was still alive since all the mechanisms in the watch were melted into a blob.

(2,220 posts)The window was open. There was a bright flash with simultaneous thunder, and it knocked me back against the refrigerator. It didnt hit the house, and I never was able to determine where it hit, but it knocked me off my feet. My heart rhythm was weird for a couple hours, and I felt strange for a few days. Hubster was at the store, and I texted him and told him I needed him to come home immediately because I thought Id been struck by lightning.
Weirdest damn thing..

(43,157 posts)It gave a warning in the sense that a visible sparkling aura surrounded the indoor light about 4-5 seconds before the hit. I felt the energy shock for hours. Only damage was to the trees, scarred down one side. The lightning headed straight for some iron at the base of the tree.
Another time I only got the aura around a basement light. I figure this is a grounding of energy coming down the lightning rod/antenna into the ground rod which is also the ground for the house wiring. So it comes into the house too. Not sure if this is a kosker setup, but that's the way electricians did it.
Once I was in the hospital and preparing to head for my car. There was light rain, light distant thunder. I could see my car maybe 400 feet away. I thought I'd better wait indoors. Sure enough. I and the lightning would have rendezvoused so closely.
