S.D. senate majority leader's son probably committed fraud

UNION CENTER, S.D. (KELO.com) — A South Dakota News Watch investigation has raised questions about whether a taxidermy business owned by the son of a state senator is operated from Texas even though application materials submitted by the son, who received more than $1 million in coronavirus grants and loans, list an address in Union Center, S.D.

Chris Cammack, son of South Dakota Senate Majority Leader Gary Cammack, received more than $700,000 in state coronavirus relief grants and more than $300,000 in forgivable federal loans for the Union Center business. State program rules say the business must be physically located in South Dakota to be eligible, and federal rules say the PPP money must protect jobs at the business that applied

Here's a link (NOT likely to be behind paywall) to the original story that investigated the alleged fraud.

When the Legislature convenes for its two Special Sessions in November, expect Senate Majority Leader Gary Lynn Cammack (R-29/Union Center) to be driving extra carefully. According to South Dakota court records, he’s on probation until after Christmas for careless driving, a misdemeanor charge he pled down to on June 29 after being arrested for driving under the influence on January 18, 2020:

I mean, maybe if you're under the legal limit but still driving badly, but if you blow .08, you're getting DUI if you're a regular person. Wonder what the details were on that ...

"The court fined Cammack $431.50 for the careless driving charge, $39 for speeding, and took another $222 out of his hide for court costs. "

Compared to a DUI, that's laughable, man ... didn't even get the 30-day DL suspension.
