2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI don't think Bernie knows how he plans to pay for a single-payer health plan.
At the heart of the debate between Clinton and Sanders over taxes is the question of what programs the federal government should be willing to pay for. Sanders has long supported a single-payer healthcare system in the style of European countries and Canada that he calls Medicare for all, saying the program would guarantee healthcare for all Americans and greatly reduce healthcare bills.
But Sanders has never firmly answered how as president he would pay for the proposal, which many have estimated to cost upwards of $15 trillion over 10 years. Legislation he has repeatedly introduced in the past has indicated he would raise taxes on the middle class, including a 2.2% income tax and a 6.7% tax on employers.
Since then, Sanders has walked back his earlier proposals, saying that he would only be willing to raise taxes on the middle class to pay for paid family leave. Sanders policy advisor, Warren Gunnels, told TIME last month that the government could pay for single-payer healthcare without raising taxes on the middle class.
A Facebook post by Sanders supporter and former President Bill Clinton advisor Robert Reich indicated Sanders was planning to release his healthcare plan today.

(3,457 posts)The United States health care system is the most expensive in the world, but this report and prior editions consistently show the U.S. underperforms relative to other countries on most dimensions of performance. Among the 11 nations studied in this reportAustralia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United Statesthe U.S. ranks last, as it did in the 2010, 2007, 2006, and 2004 editions of Mirror, Mirror. Most troubling, the U.S. fails to achieve better health outcomes than the other countries, and as shown in the earlier editions, the U.S. is last or near last on dimensions of access, efficiency, and equity.

Even Cuba with a very, very poorly funded system does better!
Figures from the World Health Organization clearly show that The United States lags behind 36 other countries in overall health system performance ranging from infant mortality, to adult mortality, to life expectancy.
20 countries in Europe and four countries in Asia have a better life expectancy than the U.S. If you are a male between the ages of 15 and 59, your chances of dying are higher in the U.S. (140 per thousand) than in Canada, 95, Costa Rica 127, Chile 134, and Cuba, 138.

(3,649 posts)Don't rely on other people to do your work for you. It is a well known fact that the U.S. pays more for healthcare than any other country. If you don't know that then it's on you to find the information.

(90,370 posts)... proposed numbers on replacing the for profit system and no placing it on the backs of the tax payer or the employer.
NOT ONE
HerbChestnut
(3,649 posts)First, my comment responded to your claim that nobody is providing numbers on where the United States compares to other countries in terms of spending on healthcare.
Second, Bernie proposed legislation in 2013 for a single payer system. It is my understanding that his current plan will be similar to that one with small differences due to changes in the ACA that will end up making the overall plan cheaper than it would have been previously.
Thirdly (as a bonus), healthcare is paid for by the taxpayer and employers already. It's called insurance premiums. Single payer systems simply cost less and will save the average person money. Period.
uponit7771
(90,370 posts)... for both ACA and single payer?
He needs to put out some details with numbers so folk can gut check it themselves
HerbChestnut
(3,649 posts)Look up the 2013 bill. The new plan will be similar.

(8,660 posts)Most interesting. All of the countries mentioned in the articles have one thing the US does not. Tort reform. We will NEVER have per capita health expenses in line with other countries until we have tort reform. The Bern knows this, yet he's voted AGAINST tort reform at least twice. Bowing to the influence of the powerful ABA? Doesn't sound like our Bernie.
Kelvin Mace
(17,469 posts)And it made ZERO difference in insurance premiums.
The purpose of tort reform is to protect corporations from paying for their negligence.
And they also have it in France, the UK, Canada and EVERY developed country that has universal healthcare. I guess the US is exceptional. Malpractice insurance is a BIG part of each doctor's budget. Much of what they do is defensive medicine, and not needed for treatment. This is a big component of why our healthcare is so expensive.
Kelvin Mace
(17,469 posts)got tort reform under Jeb and malpractice premiums continued to go up. All tort reform did was improve insurance company profit margins.

(3,649 posts)He released a bill in 2013. You even mentioned it in your OP, I believe. Of course he has an idea of how he's going to pay for it.

(59,531 posts)instead of making everyone wait until after Iowa and New Hampshire.
HerbChestnut
(3,649 posts)In fact he's on record saying this new plan will be similar to the 2013 version but with minor tweaks due to updates in the ACA which will make it more cost effective. I suspect the campaign will release the details of the plan within an hour or so of the debate so Hillary and her team don't have time to rummage through it. The rest of us, however, will have all the time in the world to look it over once it comes out.

my spouse and i do not have ins because when i checked it out under the aca it would be about 28% of our estimated income to actually use it......and it would not cover some of our main medical expenses, chiropractor, vision and dental
8% on the premium and 10% each for the 6 grand out of pocket
<shrugs>
i am not concerned about how to pay for it, the details will change no matter what is said during campaign
but i am concerned about establishing healthcare as a human right, not a privilege for the well to do

(36,281 posts)...to provide health care on par with that already provided by most other first world nations with significantly smaller budgets is just ludicrous. There is no shortage of money to pay for single payer health care. The only shortage is in the will to make it a national priority and to get it done.

(39,909 posts)...to every American family that no longer has to BUY questionable "Insurance" from the For Profit maggots.
Why do so many in the Democratic Party insist on subsidizing a parasitic Industry that:
*Manufactures NOTHING
*Provides NO useful service
*Creates NO Value Added Wealth ?
We get rid of the Health Insurance Industry, we save 15% right off the top.
More savings when we can use our combined voices for Collective Bargaining with the Health Care Providers and BIG PHARM.
Our money will go to actual Health Care,
not private jets, yachts, and new Summer Homes in Aspen for Insurance Execs and Lobbyists.
If that doesn't explain it,
I can't help you.
Please think this through before jerking a knee or repeating old Republican talking points.
(BTW, maggots provide a useful service,
so it is not fair to the maggots to compare them to the For Profit "Insurance" scammers)

(11,366 posts)Basically, the average family saves about $2,500 a year over premiums and that doesn't consider deductibles.
I don't pay premiums as it's a perk of my job, so my taxes WILL go up, but I'm fine with about $500 a year because I still won't have deductibles and the boss probably would take the savings and pay us more. We do it to attract good candidates.

It's actually the full employment plan for the formerly middle class who can't make a living wage because the unions have faded. Oh, and forget getting employed stateside...wounded, PTSD, lousy job market, etc.
Thanks for mentioning it. Guess I did rant on a bit. Oh well, beats screaming and cursing.
