Home Depot to hire 70,000

http://money.cnn.com/2012/01/12/news/companies/home_depot_hiring/index.htm?iid=HP_Highlight&hpt=hp_t1

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Get those orange aprons ready for the spring cleaning rush.

Home Depot announced Thursday it plans to hire 70,000 temporary workers at its U.S. stores to handle its spring selling season, the busiest time of the year for the home improvement chain.

How do you like them numbers Mitt?

Yes its temporary but still a good good sign.

I wonder what Intrade will do with this news.

Republicans having heart failure all over the country with this good news.

Jobs Bikini Chart graph all in the same month, probably some on the January chart and some on the February chart
Would have been even better if they were all shown on the chart in the month. Can't tell for sure by what's in the article though.

Excerpt:
The spring shopping season at Home Depot (HD, Fortune 500) is like the holiday shopping season for the typical retailer. It starts in mid-February in the warmer states, and by March in the northern parts of the country, and runs through July 4.

Its Home Depot (Massive GOP contributor) and the work is temporary. What goes up, must come down. It's an election year!

Home Depot laying off 1,000 nationwide
For the third consecutive January, Home Depot has handed out pink slips, on Wednesday announcing 1,000 job layoffs company wide.

---
Since the housing market began to crash, the home improvement giant has cut nearly 20 percent of its Atlanta corporate headquarters workforce, or about 1,150 people. There are now 4,300 employed there.

So, looks like the 70,000 temps to be hired is actual good news.

I also think people getting tax refunds gives a big boost to stores like HD. When I was married we did a home improvement project every year out of our tax refund. I think a lot of people do that.

They took them out of the store here - guys with carts of lumber kept trying to use them and it took more time to sort that out than it was worth!

but it's better than nothing and perhaps some will get on to more permanent positions. As much as I dislike HD, this is in the right direction.

I'm sure people will be able to support their families on 8-9 dollar an hour jobs, at 33 hours per week, with no health insurance. Sure... no problem at all.

We all should thank Home Depot. All hail the job creators!

Interestingly I had some good help at my big box visit a few months ago, although not as I expected.

Turned out the guy helping me find goodies for my massively unsafe but terribly fun rope swing project got laid off a few years prior from his job as an insurance adjuster -- and had fallen back on his carpentry knowledge to work in the big box store. Real nice guy, helped me figure everything out and then gave me some ideas to skirt liability issues -- lock on the rope to avoid an "attractive nuisance," carabiner clips to bring the swing in at night, etc.

Funny old world.
