By Michael A. Cohen January 18, 2016

Sunday night, I watched the fourth Democratic presidential debate so you didn’t have to.

Initial impression: Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and democracy won. This was a substantive debate, devoid of the histrionics, name-calling, and fact-free pronouncements that are pro forma in the Republican presidential confabs. Both of the leading candidates did a good job of playing to their respective bases of support. Clinton came across as the pragmatic, level-headed, won’t-rock-the-boat candidate; Sanders as the passionate reformer who wants to start a revolution. As for Martin O’Malley, he seems like a nice man who has no chance of being elected president.

Now for my deeper impression of the debate: even with his rising poll numbers in Iowa and New Hampshire, I find it increasingly difficult to take Sanders seriously as a presidential candidate.

M ....................

Maybe it’s that Sanders finds a way to answer virtually every question by turning it back to another predictable and one-dimensional attack on Wall Street and big money.

Maybe it’s that he gets away with proposing unrealistic policy ideas that have little chance of being passed even by Democrats in Congress, let alone Republicans, and then gets praised for being authentic. Sunday night Sanders finally released his single-payer health care plan, which is all of eight pages and provides little detail on how he’ll implement a complete restructuring of the US health care system. That’s at least an improvement over his plan for breaking up the banks, which is four pages and just as short on detail...............................

Remember when GWB stole his first presidential election? Well, there was a very short time right afterwards where no one articulated that it was theft. Then Vincent Bugliosi said it, and enough people jumped on it that he later came out with a book.

Not long after, a huge number of people began viewing that election as a theft.

Well, somebody has to articulate that we, too, can have social programs like universal health care. Other countries have it. In fact, we stand alone as the only major country with such a poor healthcare system. Is that too much to effing ask? Is that too much to imagine?

Wow, if it is, this country is a lot farther gone than I thought it was.

I wonder how many pages the writer feels would be appropriate for a plan 10,000? 1,000? 500? 100?

Why does it have to be detailed and specific. He has a good idea how to do it, but he's also going to need input from others, in a final bill. Should he have to list every detail specifically? Does HRC have all of her Wall Street proposals complete down to which bank she's going to tell to "cut it out" next?

Enough already of the let's not even try because "that's not how politics works" in America today.

We know what works: SuperPACs; Citizens United; big money lobbyists; big campaign contributions; conflicts of interest; corporate welfare; tax loopholes; etc.

The Hillarians are taking us down the path of acceptance of the Koch brothers formula for how government and politics ought to work.

Bernie Sanders knows exactly how politics works -- it is corrupt and needs to change.

Mr. Cohen has actually written about a Sanders virtue.
No more politics as usual; this time we can advocate for our ideals.

The trouble with Sanders' position is that the only way to get rid of Citizens United is to win in 2016. There is no practical way to past a constitutional amendment or statute that would survive the current SCOTUS review. The best way to deal with Citizens United is to win and to change the SCOTUS. President Obama was against Citizens United but had to use a super pac in 2012 to keep the contest close. Hillary Clinton is against Citizens United and has committed to only appoint SCOTUS justices who will vote to overturn this decision https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2015/05/14/hillary-clintons-litmus-test-for-supreme-court-nominees-a-pledge-to-overturn-citizens-united/

Hillary Clinton told a group of her top fundraisers Thursday that if she is elected president, her nominees to the Supreme Court will have to share her belief that the court's 2010 Citizens United decision must be overturned, according to people who heard her remarks.

Clinton's emphatic opposition to the ruling, which allowed corporations and unions to spend unlimited sums on independent political activity, garnered the strongest applause of the afternoon from the more than 200 party financiers gathered in Brooklyn for a closed-door briefing from the Democratic candidate and her senior aides, according to some of those present.

"She got major applause when she said would not name anybody to the Supreme Court unless she has assurances that they would overturn" the decision, said one attendee, who, like others, requested anonymity to describe the private session.

If the make-up of the court does not change by 2017, four of the justices will be 78 years of age or older by the time the next president is inaugurated.

This is the only practical way to undo the damage done by Citizen United in that it will be impossible to get a constitutional amendment through congress and the states to undo this decision. That means that if you want to get rid of Citizens United, then one must support a candidate who can win in 2016 and support the most viable general election candidate.
