By JULIE PACE
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) Bernie Sanders was halfway through his opening statement a stern, 45-minute lecture on domestic policy leavened with a dash of political pep talk when he realized the crowd had missed one of his rare attempts at humor.
"That was a joke!" he bellowed. Laughter briefly rippled through the audience as the Vermont senator returned to his statistic-rich pitch for increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour and breaking up big Wall Street banks.
Sanders' down-to-business demeanor on the campaign trail belies the youthful enthusiasm that's accompanied his unexpected rise in the Democratic race for president. With less than two weeks until voting begins, the 74-year-old self-described democratic socialist could win both Iowa and New Hampshire, a once unthinkable outcome in a primary campaign that was supposed to be tailor-made for Hillary Clinton.
"Today the inevitable candidate doesn't look quite so inevitable," Sanders told voters who braved icy roads and single-digit temperatures to see him speak Tuesday morning in Fort Dodge.

(5,141 posts)There is NOTHING wrong with it and we have to stop being afraid of the stupid Red Scare tactic theyre going to undoubtedly use time and again. Its way past its sell-by date.
All of Europe knows there isnt a damned thing wrong with Socialism and its about time we dropped the stupid cold war tactic. Theyre going to say it and there isnt a damn thing we can do except embrace it.
Just my 2 cents.

We are witnessing a sea change in our political landscape, and I am proud of Senator Sanders for leading the way.

(469 posts)We've gotta EXPLAIN it. We have to make people aware that there IS a difference between Democratic Socialism and Communism. That there's even a difference between Democratic Socialism and Soviet Socialism. I've already had to explain this to my father-in-law & both my brothers in-law (one of whom attended U.Vermont when Bernie was Burlington's Mayor, but STILL insisted (until Thanksgiving) that Bernie is a Communist)!
I THINK they understand now - not to say that any of them actually supports Bernie ... YET! The brother-in-law who went to UV is now an attorney in NYC, and a Trump supporter, so he may be a lost cause, but Dad & the other brother-in-law may yet come around.

Also it only works as a scare word if Dems are denying it and running from it. Bernie is proud of it and will be re-educating the nation..

(1,779 posts)My wife and I saw the movie, The Big Short this weekend, and we were reminded of the depravity of the group of people that think profits above all. I agree that we should make Known Capitalist a pejorative, because they crash the country, made so many average Americans destitute, and they had not been punished. Indeed, they want to work their ideas again, to the detriment of each one of us.
The media in general, ignore their depredations on the American people. They try at the bottom to hide their calumnies under the rug.
But I absolutely agree with you--"Known Capitalist" should be a curse word. Because it means we are pointing at people who care more about short-term profits than the well-being of others.

(368 posts)Clinton has a lot more experience. So what came of it? She supported Bush and Cheney, to invade Iraq, joining voices with those who claimed that Iraq had weapons and was responsible for 9/11. Really?????
That alone shows her inability to fully grasp reality in the Middle East. With Sanders' lack of experience, he opposed U.S. invasion because he strongly believed that it would throw the entire region into total havoc.
Who was correct?

Criticism
In early coverage of a breaking story, details are commonly sketchy, usually due to the limited information that is available at the time. For example, during the Sago Mine disaster, there were initial reports that all twelve miners were found alive, but news organizations later learned that only one actually survived.
Often it is considered important to be quick with news bulletins also for less important news. Such news might not be mentioned on later days, even if it was found that information was wrong.
Another criticism has been the diluting of the importance of "breaking news" by the need of 24-hour news channels to fill time, applying the title to soft news stories of questionable importance and urgency (for example, car chases). Others question as to whether the use of the term is excessive, citing occasions when the term is used even though scheduled programming is not interrupted.[7] Some programs, such as HLN's Nancy Grace, have even used the term for events which occurred months before.
In June 2013, Fox affiliate WDRB in Louisville, Kentucky gained notice in the television industry for a promo that criticized the broad and constant use of the "breaking news" term, explaining that that it has been overused as a "marketing ploy" by other news-producing stations, who tend to apply the term to stories that are low in urgency and/or relevance. To coincide with the promo, on its website, WDRB posted "Contracts" with its viewers and advertisers, with the former list promising to use "breaking news" judiciously (applying it to stories that are "both 'breaking' and 'news'" .[8]
