2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI just switched from Green to Democrat so that I can vote Bernie in the CA Democratic primary(link)
I am so happy to finally have someone to vote for who I am excited about!! Bernie is frickin awesome!!
In California you can register up to 15 days before an election, so you still have some time, but get it done now. You can do it all completely online now in California. Here's the link:

(22,271 posts)One does NOT have to register as a Democrat in order to vote for Bernie in the California primary. You CAN vote for Bernie in the California primary if you are a registered Democrat OR a registered Decline to State. If you choose the latter, when you go to vote, they'll ask you if you want a Democratic Party ballot or do you want a Republicn Party ballot. Just ask for the Democrat. Ths is an important point because as I've registered people to vote while campaigning for Bernie I've had many people say they wanted to vote for Bernie but they did NOT want to join the Democratic Party. The Decline to State is an excellent alternative.

(3,855 posts)I was not clear on all the minutiae of which affiliations will allow you to vote in the Democratic primary. This clears it up for me, and I will spread the word to my friends.
I've been registered as Green for 29 years. I wanted to make absolutely sure that I could vote for Bernie, so I registered Dem. I'm likely to switch it back to Green after the election unless I see the Democratic Party move significantly toward the left/progressive.
My 69 year old mom is a die-hard, dedicated Hillary supporter, but I'm working on her. My 49 year old sister is more receptive to Bernie. I'd say she's "on the fence". They both live in NH, so I'm working them pretty hard to switch.
I wasn't aware that the Dem primary in CA is not until June. That is so late. On the other hand, maybe it will give Bernie a lot of time to build momentum before the lion's share of delegates are decided.

(5,204 posts)That's the American Independent party. A lot of people must think "I'm an American and I want to register independent". Then they're in a right-wing party and can't vote in the Democratic primary.
left on green only
(1,484 posts).......except I have decided to wait until it gets closer to the deadline date to switch, before making my temporary move. It is entirely possible that by the end of May, Bernie will have already secured all of the delegates that he needs to win the nomination; thereby making the California primary contest a moot point.
Wouldn't that be nice!?
As much as it is important for me to be able to vote for Bernie, somehow the thought of joining the same political party as DWS causes me to feel an uncontrollable need to hurl across the room and texture the wall on the other side.
