I proudly stand with the New York Times in their endorsement of Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton
for the Democratic
Nomination
Voters have the chance to choose one of
the most broadly and deeply qualified
presidential candidates in modern history.

For the past painful year, the Republican presidential contenders have been bombarding Americans with empty propaganda slogans and competing, bizarrely, to present themselves as the least experienced person for the most important elected job in the world. Democratic primary voters, on the other hand, after a substantive debate over real issues, have the chance to nominate one of the most broadly and deeply qualified presidential candidates in modern history.

Hillary Clinton would be the first woman nominated by a major party. She served as a senator from a major state (New York) and as secretary of state — not to mention her experience on the national stage as first lady with her brilliant and flawed husband, President Bill Clinton. The Times editorial board has endorsed her three times for federal office — twice for Senate and once in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary — and is doing so again with confidence and enthusiasm.

Mrs. Clinton’s main opponent, Senator Bernie Sanders, a self-described Democratic Socialist, has proved to be more formidable than most people, including Mrs. Clinton, anticipated. He has brought income inequality and the lingering pain of the middle class to center stage and pushed Mrs. Clinton a bit more to the left than she might have gone on economic issues. Mr. Sanders has also surfaced important foreign policy questions, including the need for greater restraint in the use of military force.

And why is she suddenly crying for more debates after 8 months of ducking and dodging them if she is such a sure thing?

56. It was Rachel Maddow who pushed for the pre-New Hampshire debate. It's Sanders who demands 3 more.

Hillary is not "crying" for more debates. Sanders and O'Malley are.

It is not Hillary supporters but some Sanders supporters and Sanders campaign staff that have gone off the "deep end." So much so that they have had to issue an apology.

It's not Hillary supporters who have been swarming people's Facebook pages for endorsing a top Dem candidate. It is not Hillary supporters who berate and accuse people of color of having "Stockholm" or women of "voting with their vaginas" just because they support the rival Dem candidate.

Your post encapsulates how truly divorced from the facts some Sanders supporters have become.

75. Exactly. Sanders supporters on this site don't realize how much harm they are doing their candidate

When undecided voters see the crap they constantly say about Clinton, it's definitely not going to make them break towards Sanders. It's funny how he always talks about how he refuses to attack or go negative (a LIE), but his supporters are rabidly attacking Clinton instead of building up their own candidate.

I've never seen a group of people so eager to claim they are victims at the same time they are viciously attacking other people.

120. New York's primary is on April 19 - 233 delegates, second only to California.

There hasn't been a poll released since June, but at that time Clinton was ahead by 55-15, with Biden at 9. As we've seen just about all of Biden's support wound up going to Clinton.

New York is a shoo-in, probably by at least 15%.

63. You mean like the new ad in Iowa where they lifted a positive line about Sanders from the.....

....De Moines Register, implying that the De Moines Register endorsed Sanders?

http://www.dailynewsbin.com/news/bernie-sanders-tv-ad-claims-des-moines-register-endorsed-him-it-actually-endorsed-hillary-clinton/23701/

This article points out the uptick in recent devious actions by the Sanders campaign:

"Just one day after a pair of major advocacy groups both accused Bernie Sanders of using print advertising to falsely claiming that they had endorsed him, his campaign is now running television ads which misrepresent the position of an influential Iowa newspaper. The new Sanders ads claim that the Des Moines Register has endorsed him. That’s a problem, because the newspaper has actually endorsed his democratic party rival Hillary Clinton instead."

"Over the past two days the AARP and the League of Conservation Voters have both accused Bernie Sanders of falsely claiming that he had their endorsements, when the AARP hasn’t endorsed anyone and the LCV has actually endorsed Clinton. The Nevada Culinary Union has accused Sanders staffers of impersonating union members in order to gain improper access to other members. But the fake Des Moines Register endorsement, which has been documented by the New York Times, may be the most controversial yet."

As they say, desperate times call for desperate measures.

68. Yes! Wasn't that clever!? The height of integrity!

Just give a partial quote, out of context, and sandwich it between other actual endorsements, and it too can be easily mistaken as being an actual endorsement from the cited source.

Sometimes I wonder if these ad-writers just throw up their hands in frustration and exclaim "Fuck it! What have we got to lose!?"

67. Oh?

She is the only one who meets the qualifications? I don't think so. I believe that ALL THREE candidates are qualified to be president. The matter is preference.

Just in case you forgot, here they are:
Age and Citizenship requirements - US Constitution, Article II, Section 1
No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

Term limit amendment - US Constitution, Amendment XXII, Section 1 - ratified February 27, 1951
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.

I got that from the US Constitution. You can look it up yourself if you wish.

I think she'd be a great Secty of State for President Sanders if John Kerry has had enough.

20. The part about

being pushed more to the left than she would otherwise be is concerning. Does this imply that the prose in which she would govern would backtrack on these issues? It seems to reaffirm many people's belief that she may not practice what she preaches. But as a New Yorker myself, she would have to be an unmitigated disaster for the Times not to endorse her. I guess that should count for something.

it seems to me that the standard for "informed and responsible liberalism" is wholly reliant on whether or not Clinton is being praised by the source.

At which point did Hillary Clinton become the absolute definition of liberalism?

I will tell you a "funny", true, "pie in the face" story.

When I was a young man in the 1980s I had a friend named Mark. He was about eight years years older than me and crazy. There was a Penthouse Pet signing autographs at the Volusia Mall in Daytona Beach, Florida. He felt or ostensibly felt what Penthouse Pets do is immoral so he brought a pie with him and when it came time to getting her autograph he smashed her in the face with it and ran away. Daytona Beach was/is kind of a small town so she found out who he was. She sent him an autographed magazine and in the centerfold of her was the greeting "To Mark, F--- You" .

113. The New York Times endorsed Kasich, not Clinton. Clinton's endorsement was limited to the primary.

Which brings us to their actual choice: John Kasich.

That’s right, The New York Times is throwing its support (with the standard caveats) to Kasich. Here’s why:

Gov. John Kasich of Ohio, though a distinct underdog, is the only plausible choice for Republicans tired of the extremism and inexperience on display in this race…

As a veteran of partisan fights and bipartisan deals during nearly two decades in the House, he has been capable of compromise and believes in the ability of government to improve lives. He favors a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, and he speaks of government’s duty to protect the poor, the mentally ill and others “in the shadows.” While Republicans in Congress tried more than 60 times to kill Obamacare, Mr. Kasich did an end-run around Ohio’s Republican Legislature to secure a $13 billion Medicaid expansion to cover more people in his state.

Their endorsement of Kasich is tempered with the understanding that he is pro-life, anti-gay marriage, and has “gone after public-sector unions.” Still, they credit him for attempting to run a more civil campaign than his Republican opponents.
