2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumLast night, Gwen Ifill might as well have asked Bernie Sanders when he stopped beating his wife.
"Senator, do you worry at all that you will be the instrument of thwarting history, as Senator Clinton keeps claiming, that she might be the first woman president?"
Get out of the way old man, and I stress man, you're standing in the way of history: We've got a woman to elect. You're keeping us from correcting an historical wrong.
Shortly after that I turned the TV. Questions like that have no place in a debate.

She effectively told him he should be standing aside; that he was on the wrong side of history, while she and others were working so hard to elect the first woman to the office.
Debate moderators are no longer expected to be neutral I guess.

(11,990 posts)I think there is a portion of the electorate--those who are psychically invested in seeing the first woman president--who do, in part, see Sanders that way. By asking the question, she actually opened the door for Bernie to speak to those voters and address it head on. And it's part of the moderator's job to facilitate that sort of thing, to give the candidate a way to address a criticism. It doesn't mean the moderator personally believes that criticism herself. And I think he gave a great answer.

(54,041 posts)The idea that a moderator can't ask pointed or loaded questions in a debate is a direct borrow from the tough-talking mental weaklings in the Republican race who are afraid of being exposed. Sanders has nothing to hide. Tough questions? Pfff, it's a tough job they're applying for.

Debates in this country are so stupid - the formats are stupid, the questions are stupid, and giving people 90 seconds to answer them is insulting to the intelligence of voters.
