Guess who was stumping for Bernie tonight?

Dick Van Dyke emcees Sanders rally at Reno nightclub

Dick Van Dyke has been voting in presidential elections since casting his ballot for Harry Truman in 1948. But until this year, the last time the Television Hall of Fame actor actively campaigned for a White House contender was in 1968, for anti-Vietnam War Democrat Eugene McCarthy.

Now the 90-year-old Van Dyke —still acting in small roles in movies and TV shows, and still quick with a genial one-liner — finds himself stumping for Democratic contender Bernie Sanders.

Nothing political, long-form interview of more than an hour with Dick Van Dyke. Lots of stories. Including some about Mary Tyler Moore (no dirt or sensationalism, at least by today's standards).

Great, great interview.

His hour+ interview on Marc Maron's WTF a few years ago is well worth finding as well.

“Woodrow Wilson, in 1913, said there’s an invisible force running the country, and he blamed the banks and the corporations and the insurance companies. And since then it’s only gotten worse. Ike (President Dwight D. Eisenhower) warned us about the military-industrial complex. Jimmy Carter, in an interview recently, said he couldn’t get anything done (as president) because of the power of the lobbyists. It’s at a place where the election is almost a little charade they let us go through. I think the thing is rigged. It’s been brought up so many times before, but nobody ever listens. And somehow, Bernie got their attention.”

How did he manage to get voters’ attention?

“I don’t know,” Van Dyke said with a laugh. “He’s got a fire in his belly, there’s no doubt about that. The rest of the candidates act as if the problem he brings up doesn’t exist. And for god sakes, they’re afraid to say so.”

Just on a random note, the video below is charming. A flash mob came to serenade him on his 90th birthday. See what happens.

Of his character in particular in my favorite childhood movie.

Once, back around 1988 or so, I was walking with my family on a path down to some docks in so Cal; nobody was around, until I looked up and saw this man walking toward us. He looked familiar. When we got closer, he put his hands in his pockets, hopped off of the walk into the road to make room for my family, and noticed my eyes getting big. He grinned, winked, and gave a little wave, and we all kept going.

I'm happy, of course, that he is supporting Bernie. I'm even happier that he's 90 and still out there, active and involved.

Iy was a real show business crowd and several actors who had worked with Dick approached him. You could tell he really remembered them all, quite a feat in a 70 year career. You could tell they adored Dick.

So glad he's for Bernie.
