2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumOh crap. I just remembered that as a teen, I stuffed envelopes for Lester Maddox.
My mother knew him and I went to volunteer with her for one of his campaigns.
Pretty sure that makes me a racist.
I'll leave now...

(11,366 posts)It was the The Beatles who liked Jelly Bellies. They really are two different candies.

(32,342 posts)"Reagan was not down with any old generic brand beans, however. As TIME explained:
The type most esteemed by the President is brand-named Jelly Belly, whichaddicts vowis to the ordinary jelly bean what foie gras is to liverwurst. About one-fourth the size of the Easter-basket staple and three times as expensive (up to $4 per lb.), Bellys come in an array of 36 flavors. Their manufacturer, Herman Goelitz Co. of Oakland, maintains that the flavors are so delicate that the beans should be eaten one at a time, not by the vulgar handful. How else to appreciate the richness of the coffee mocha, the tang of the piña colada, the bouquet of the strawberry daiquiri?
Goelitz began supplying Reagan when he was governor of California, during which time he and his visitors plowed through two dozen 1-lb bags monthly, amounting to approximately 10,200 beans. As president, Reagan placed a standing order of 720 bags per month (306,070 beans), to be distributed among the White House, Capitol Hill and other federal buildings.
Its probably time for the Jelly Belly Candy Co. to start lobbying presidential hopefuls to get their product back in the Oval Office."

Lester and his kiss-ass entourage walked in and wants to shake my hand. I debated just turning around, but decided to ask him if he could wait a minute. The little racist pissant left, thankfully.
I really hate that ignorant gun toting, pick handle wielding, racist who came to fame chasing Black people out of his restaurant. I also hate some right wing arse who says, "but Maddox hired more Blacks than any previous gubnor." Yeah, you racist ass, the previous gubnor hired zero and Maddox was under a court order.
Lots of teenagers did stuff like stuff envelops for the Dixiecrats back then. It's what happened when you wised up that counts.

He became a Republican not long after.

(1,499 posts)Seriously though, that is a VERY fair point.
There was a knee-jerk reaction when some prominent Hillary supporters put out artful smears suggesting that Bernie was not active in the civil rights movement as a young man (as he had claimed) to respond in kind by putting out the artful smear that Hillary was a Goldwater Girl.
Of course, what really matters is where they stand now, not then.
I have a great idea . . . instead of leaving, why don't you stay and dedicate yourself to initiating substantive discussions about the policy differences between the two candidates vying for the Democratic nomination? I would be glad to join in. (Please note that I can't join you if you initiate those discussions in the Hillary Clinton group because someone blocked me when I tried to make a similar suggestion there.)

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
I've alerted twice and received no response. This is flamebait and has nothing to do with the pr imaries. It adds nothing to the discussion of the candidates. It's divisive and ugly.
