(7,809 posts)Sorry, PonyUp, this is not really a reply to your post. I just wanted to get what I have to say at the top.
I heard a couple days ago that Brian Sandoval might be interested in running for Senate when Harry Reid retires. Since he's fairly popular in NV, the gov would probably get it - thereby flipping the seat to a Republican.
Sandoval has already been a federal judge and he would probably be very interested in a lifelong position in Washington DC with all the prestige but without mucking around raising funds for reelection. Furthermore, he was pretty moderate for a Republican (he accepted the MedicAid expansion here). He would make a decent Supreme.
Reid is trying to raise the chances of keeping his Senate seat in Democratic hands.
Let's not underestimate the senior Senator from my state. He's crazy like a fox.
Punkingal
(9,522 posts)And I did a lot of work in primaries, etc, and let me tell you, no one got elected in Nevada without his say so, even Republicans. He wanted NO ONE to have any power in Nevada but his damn self. He has been known to make statements about how he would be okay with such and such a Republican getting elected. That way he had zero competition in the Democratic party there.
He has been a bad leader in the Senate and I am glad his sorry ass is retiring. He is a slimy crook.

(18,636 posts)In 2010 Sandoval beat Harry Reid's son by a considerable margin, yet you claim no one got elected without Harry's say so. That's some tough love there.

(1,859 posts)I no longer watch the senate. When we had a majority I did keep track and the lip service we got while our own dems sided with the republicans under the guise of the republicans being inflexible so we had to be anti-partisan on our part, was painfully obvious that we were simply being sold out. I mean, we had the majority.

There is also a tweet by the Washington Post in the article with a timestamp of 10:10am EST yesterday saying the same thing.
Are NBC News and the Washington Post good enough sources? Do I have to explain myself to you any more or am I free to go?

(13,058 posts)The article states that Sandoval was being considered for a court pick. We all know that. But what you said was that "I heard a couple days ago that Brian Sandoval might be interested in running for Senate when Harry Reid retires." The article says no such thing. You have not substantiated your claim that Sandoval might br interested in running for the Senate. So there is no need for an attitude on your part.

Lately, there have been those who have argued that Mr Obama is tired of trying to make nice and appease the GOP to "get stuff done." Hence executive orders that have been more progressive than otherwise. His choice as nominee will tell us much about what his mind-set truly is. Which is, in fact, one reason why "due course" may be a lot longer than many seem to think.

(14,174 posts)Because Obama, if he predictably follows his pattern of desperately trying to find something, anything, that he can conjole the GOP senators to pass for him in order to add a bi-partisan credential to his legacy, will pick someone like this as his nominee. And Reid will gladly strong-arm Democrats to vote in favour as well.
Go ahead GOP, make my day...lets wait for President Bernie to nominate a candidate. And if its Hillary, really nothing to lose at least by waiting.

(15,480 posts)Reid formally announced on March 27, 2015 that he will retire at the end of his current term on January 3, 2017, saying that his recent injuries and subsequent recovery had nothing to do with his decision.[1][2][3]
Criticism
Liberal critics have argued that Reid was not doing enough to end the American military presence in Iraq,[38] and that he allowed Senate Republicans to create a 60-vote bar for passage of bills without a Democratic filibuster.[39][40][41] Conservatives have criticized Reid for his extensive use of the procedural tactic known as "Filling the tree" to prevent amendments on important bills.[42]
Reid has also been criticized for several potentially self-enriching tactics. In 2005, Reid earmarked a spending bill to provide for building a bridge between Nevada and Arizona that would make land he owned more valuable. Reid called funding for construction of a bridge over the Colorado River, among other projects, "incredibly good news for Nevada" in a news release after passage of the 2006 transportation bill. He owned 160 acres (65 ha) of land several miles from the proposed bridge site in Arizona. The bridge could add value to his real estate investment.[43] A year later it was reported that Reid had used campaign donations to pay for $3,300 in Christmas gifts to the staff at the condominium where he resides;[44] federal election law prohibits candidates from using political donations for personal use. Reid's staff stated that his campaign attorneys had approved this use of the funds, but that Reid would personally reimburse his campaign for the expenses. Citizens United filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission to investigate the matter.[45]
A series of investigative reports in the Los Angeles Times[46][47][48][49] suggested that Reid had introduced legislation and imposed pressure on regulatory agencies to advance the business interests of his close friend Harvey Whittemore, a Nevada attorney-lobbyist who contributed heavily to Reid's campaigns and leadership fund and who employed Reid's son Leif as his personal attorney. With Reid's help, Whittemore was able to proceed with construction of a $30 billion planned golf course development, Coyote Springs, a project heavily criticized by environmental groups for reasons including its projected effects on several endangered species.[50][51]

(15,480 posts)TS Eliot - The Hollow Men
We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats' feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar
Shape without form, shade without colour,
Paralysed force, gesture without motion;
Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death's other Kingdom
Remember us - if at all - not as lost
Violent souls, but only
As the hollow men
The stuffed men.
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.
http://www.artofeurope.com/eliot/eli2.htm
"The Hollow Men" (1925) is a poem by T. S. Eliot. Its themes are, like many of Eliot's poems, overlapping and fragmentary, but it is recognized to be concerned most with post-World War I Europe under the Treaty of Versailles (which Eliot despised).
The final stanza may be the most quoted of all of Eliot's poetry:
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.
Nevil Shute's novel, On the Beach (1957), takes its name from the second stanza of Part IV of the poem and extracts from the poem, including the passage in which the novel's title appears, have been printed in the front papers of some editions of the book including the 1957 first US edition.[19]
IV
The eyes are not here
There are no eyes here
In this valley of dying stars
In this hollow valley
This broken jaw of our lost kingdoms
In this last of meeting places
We grope together
And avoid speech
Gathered on this beach of the tumid river

Kidding aside, this is less of an endorsement and more of a concession that if Sandoval is offered up, Reid would support the president's nomination decision. Having said that, he's far from being a right wing religious nut job like his predecessor and is already considered one of the front runners for the gig. Imagine the Republicans having to find excuses to shun him.
As for Reid endorsing Clinton, that's no surprise as 39 other member of the Senate already have, including my own, the great Sherrod Brown. Bernie has one (1).

President Obama: No Republican Appointment to the SCOTUS
President Obama - You have faced an unprecedented level of obstructionism from the Republicans in Congress. Millions of Americans voted for you twice and have stood up for you during the repeated attacks on your character, competence, and accomplishments. It is now your turn to stand up for us by not caving in to Republican pressure by nominating Brian Sandoval to the Supreme Court.
