Politico article: Voting Rights Act under siege

An intensifying conservative legal assault on the Voting Rights Act could precipitate what many civil rights advocates regard as the nuclear option: a court ruling striking down one of the core elements of the landmark 1965 law guaranteeing African Americans and other minorities access to the ballot box.

At the same time, the view that states should have free rein to change their election laws even in places with a history of Jim Crow seems to be gaining traction within the Republican Party.

“There certainly has been a major change,” said Rick Hasen, a professor of election law at the University of California at Irvine. “Now, you have a whole bunch of credible mainstream state attorneys general and governors taking this view. … That would have been unheard of even five years ago. You would have been accused of being a racist.”

==================

Decent article discussing this very important issue. The GOP knows the demographics are against them and getting worse by the minute. They know their only hope is to impose restrictions to limit certain segments of the population from voting. It scares me what could happen if the Republicans ever take control again of all branches of Government. I think we might very well see a resurgence of "Jim Crow"-like regulations.

True. And rightly so. The only difference is that these days the Republican disenfranchisement
efforts have been expanded to include not only blacks, but Hispanics, the elderly, students, and
anyone who fits into their demographic charts as a likely Democratic voter.

Now, you don't have to be a black voter for the Republicans to try to deny your right to vote.
It is sufficient to be a "likely Democratic voter" for them to try and make sure you are denied
the right to vote.

These days, Republicans are equal-opportunity crooks.

Here in Wisconsin the Republicans passed an outrageous bill that is guaranteed to cause mass confusion on election day, as the two posts linked above show.
