That's why Clinton won Newton 63%-36.5% (14,640 - 8,489). Had Bill not been in that parking lot, the vote would have surely been 14,640 - 28,489, thereby giving Bernie Massachusetts! Cheaters!!!!

(36,437 posts)I can hold these two thoughts in my head at once:
1) Bill Clinton is a shithead who shouldn't have been anywhere near a polling place
2) Hillary Clinton won Massachusetts regardless of Bill's antics
Can you entertain those two thoughts at once?
In any case, it should be the Clinton people who are throwing things at Bill: if he delayed or blocked voters in Newton, those voters were far more likely to be Hillary supporters - the area went to Clinton nearly 2-1!

Psychological projection, also known as blame shifting, is a theory in psychology in which humans defend themselves against their own unpleasant impulses by denying their existence while attributing them to others.[1] For example, a person who is rude may constantly accuse other people of being rude.
According to some research, the projection of one's negative qualities onto others is a common process in everyday life.[2]

If not, what's the problem? I'm used to seeing candidates and signs on the street outside a polling place, as long as they're outside the 50 foot limit or whatever it is.
UglyGreed
(7,661 posts)Activities in the Polling Location
On Election Day, certain activities are prohibited within the polling location and within 150 feet of the polling place. General Law chapter 54, section 65 prohibits within 150 feet of a polling location, among other things, the posting, exhibition, circulation, or distribution of material--including pasters, stickers, posters, cards, handbills, placards, pictures or circulars--intended to influence the action of the voter. G. L. 54, § 65 (2002 ed.). Consistent with the activities restricted by statute, the implementing regulations prohibit the solicitation of votes for or against, or any other form of promotion or opposition of, any person or political party or position on a ballot question, to be voted on at the current election. 950 C.M.R. § 54.04(22)(d). Accordingly, a person standing within 150 feet of a polling location, including observers in the polling location, may not: hold any campaign sign; hand any person literature intended to influence the voters action at the polls; wear any campaign buttons or identifying signage; solicit a persons vote for or against a candidate or question on the ballot; or, distribute stickers. Circulators of nomination papers, initiative and referenda petitions are also restricted from soliciting signatures within 150 feet of a building entrance door to a polling place. G. L. c. 54, § 65 (2002 ed.). This is true even where the nomination papers, initiative petition or referendum have nothing to do with the current election.

(8,048 posts)you are there to make sure the law is obeyed. You don't say "Beat it," you say, "Excuse me Mr. President, you may not have been aware of this, but our local election law requires you to move further away from the polling place. Thank you."
I'm sorry you find it laughable that anyone would ask a former president to obey the law.

they did not do their job so not only Bill but the poll watchers need to be held accountable. Good to see in the end we agree.

Hopefully, once the primaries are over, we can get back to the very serious work of keeping the Republicans as far from the presidency as possible.
UglyGreed
(7,661 posts)upset you but I just find this attitude that a former POTUS showing up in around polling places is not a disregard for the rules mind boggling. Thanks for the replies and I'm sorry if I mistook your position on the subject.
thucythucy
(8,048 posts)if Bill Clinton was violating election laws he should have been dealt with as any other citizen violating such laws would be dealt with.
Generally, that would mean a poll watcher coming out to ask, politely, that the citizen move away so as to conform to the rules. I've seen this happen multiple times. Generally, people simply aren't aware they're in violation of the relevant ordinance, and they obey when asked. I can't imagine that a) Clinton KNEW he was breaking the rules (assuming he was) or B) he wouldn't have moved if asked--especially since it would have happened in front of multiple press and cameras.
But if the person in question doesn't obey, then the police are called and the person is again asked, perhaps a bit more firmly, to move on. I've also seen this happen, and this has always, in my experience, got the job done.
The next step -- which I've never seen happen -- is for the police to take the violator into custody, after which it becomes a criminal justice matter.
I think the tone around what Clinton did here is just ridiculous. There's another thread where a poster says, quite seriously, that even if President Clinton wasn't breaking any laws whatsoever, he should still somehow be barred from appearing near polling places, because even his very appearance is "violating the spirit of the law." That's ridiculous, and probably unconstitutional. Even former presidents have the right to campaign, or simply stand around on a street corner, if they so choose.
I hope Bernie wins the nomination, and then the GE, but this ridiculous nit picking reminds me too much of the Benghazi Committee, Ken Starr, and all the other GOP BS comments. I'm very disheartened to see it here on DU.
