(2,550 posts)On the one that passed, and helped the industry (TARP), he voted Nay.

The specific auto one that DIDN'T pass, he voted Yay.

The OP of this thread is about the bill that never was passed, but TARP was used to keep the industry afloat.

(1,835 posts)Bernie opposed TARP, the Wall Street bailout program, but he voted for the auto bailout.

(2,550 posts)That actually did it.
Rehashing what could've happened and what did happen 8 years ago isn't something I personally want to get into.

(50,254 posts)It's enough that he voted for the other bill.
We could argue about it, but I think we both know where we stand at and could both argue the point.
The money came from TARP.
Sanders and Clinton both voted for cloture, to limit debate on the bill. That vote failed. That's hardly failing to vote for the bailout.

(7,339 posts)His response to her claim was to go into the Wall Street bailout. Why didn't he correct her?

(2,550 posts)TARP bailed out Wall St and kept the auto industry from failing.

(7,339 posts)If he was supportive of the auto bailout portion, but couldn't vote that way because of the much larger Wall St portion, then he should have emphasized that so it was clear. imho
Enrique
(27,461 posts)she didn't lie, imo, he voted against releasing TARP funds. If he had been prepared he could have pointed out that he supported the auto bailout but opposed the bank bailout. He did that just now with the crime bill, but he blew it imho on the TARP vote.

(14,157 posts)FACT!

(937 posts)In short, a Senator or congressman could not vote to rescue GM and Chrysler without voting to provide the money to keep the nation's largest investment banks from failing.
Sen. Clinton voted yes. Sen. Sanders voted no.

(1,508 posts)The auto bailout did not help flint to any great extent.
After World War II, Flint remained an auto industry powerhouse along with much of the state. General Motors had a big plant there and auto assembly lines drove the area's growth, experts say.
But in recent decades, Flint's manufacturing sector has been gutted. Consider this: 20 years ago, there were 46,000 manufacturing workers in Flint, mostly driven by its once booming auto industry.
Today there are a mere 12,400 workers in manufacturing in Flint.
"The loss of auto industry employment -- that's a big Michigan story, but nowhere is it bigger than in Flint," says Ballard. Looking forward: "The challenges are profound."
