On the one that passed, and helped the industry (TARP), he voted Nay.

http://www.politico.com/story/2008/10/the-senate-bailout-vote-014196

The specific auto one that DIDN'T pass, he voted Yay.

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=2&vote=00215

The OP of this thread is about the bill that never was passed, but TARP was used to keep the industry afloat.

Bernie opposed TARP, the Wall Street bailout program, but he voted for the auto bailout.

That actually did it.

Rehashing what could've happened and what did happen 8 years ago isn't something I personally want to get into.

The money came from TARP.

Sanders and Clinton both voted for cloture, to limit debate on the bill. That vote failed. That's hardly failing to vote for the bailout.

If he was supportive of the auto bailout portion, but couldn't vote that way because of the much larger Wall St portion, then he should have emphasized that so it was clear. imho

she didn't lie, imo, he voted against releasing TARP funds. If he had been prepared he could have pointed out that he supported the auto bailout but opposed the bank bailout. He did that just now with the crime bill, but he blew it imho on the TARP vote.

The $82 billion that helped finance the bankruptcy of General Motors, Chrysler, their finance subsidiaries -- GMAC and Chrysler Financial -- and a handful of large suppliers were part of a much larger Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) that covered more than $700 billion that went to bailout the largest banks, and AIG, the insurance giant that has issued credit default swaps that came due when the banks could not cover their losses on mortgage-backed securities.

In short, a Senator or congressman could not vote to rescue GM and Chrysler without voting to provide the money to keep the nation's largest investment banks from failing.

Sen. Clinton voted yes. Sen. Sanders voted no.

The auto bailout did not help flint to any great extent.

After World War II, Flint remained an auto industry powerhouse along with much of the state. General Motors had a big plant there and auto assembly lines drove the area's growth, experts say.

But in recent decades, Flint's manufacturing sector has been gutted. Consider this: 20 years ago, there were 46,000 manufacturing workers in Flint, mostly driven by its once booming auto industry.

Today there are a mere 12,400 workers in manufacturing in Flint.

"The loss of auto industry employment -- that's a big Michigan story, but nowhere is it bigger than in Flint," says Ballard. Looking forward: "The challenges are profound."
