I have asked conservatives who have an issue with a single payer healthcare system if they think we should allow people to die on the street if they don't have health insurance or enough money to pay. Nobody I've ever talked to has ever said yes to that. I say we have a form of universal healthcare, people without insurance just have to wait until they're extremely sick to go to emergency room and then we all pick up the tab. Now is that a smart way to deal with healthcare? Is it smart to have somebody go to the emergency room because they cut their blood pressure medication in half because they couldn't afford the prescription? So if we're going to ultimately cover everybody, why not do it in an intelligent way?
I also point out to people that no matter how well off you are, if you or somebody in your family draws the short straw with regard to a health issue and aren't adequately insured, it can wipe you out financially. Most people are well aware of that.
I think when you push on people a little bit, virtually everybody will acknowledge that our current healthcare system is a disaster and they are open to alternatives if they're presented in a common sense way.
