Bernie’s impressive animal welfare record deserves attention, may sway voters

https://medium.com/%40yvonneclaes/bernie-s-impressive-animal-rights-record-deserves-attention-may-sway-voters-dd7c2f8581e

It turns out Bernie is not only a man of the people. He’s a man of dogs, cats, horses, monkeys, etc. The Bern Man is a regular Doctor Doolittle who’s done a lot for our non-homosapien friends....

Bernie has received 100 percent ratings from the Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF), which works to pass animal protection laws and supports candidates who do, and the Defenders of Wildlife, which seeks to protect wildlife in their natural habitats....

Bernie’s strong animal advocacy record is something the Sanders’ campaign needs to publicize because many Americans love their pets, consider them family members, and would gladly vote for a presidential candidate who feels the same.

And Bernie has a record of co-sponsoring animal-friendly legislation covering cruelty, breeding and captivity practices, livestock issues, and wildlife protection.

To be fair, Hillary did at one time have a cat, Socks.

Bernie's compassion for animals would have persuaded me if I weren't already voting for him. I think the way people treat animals says a lot about who they are, deep down.

I'm pretty sure that Hillary scored as well as Bernie in the Humane Society Legislative Fund ratings when she was in Congress.

It's great that Bernie is strong on animal issues, but I think this may not be a difference between the two candidates.

(Incidentally, Hillary Clinton earned a HSLF score of 83. The score is partly due to her abstaining from voting on Senate Bill 714, which would have prohibited for research the use of dogs and cats randomly obtained via “theft … and fraudulent response to ‘free to good home ads’.”)

Not the least of which being that just because there's one 'good' blurb in a given bill, it doesn't mean that the whole thing was good. There could've been another similar bill with similar measures in it that she voted for ... or maybe she just slept in that day ... who knows, really. I wouldn't read too much into it myself without knowing more details than what's in this story.

I had seen 2005, where they both scored 100. In checking further...

In 2007, they both scored 75

http://www.hslf.org/assets/pdfs/humane-scorecard/humane-scorecard-2007.pdf

In 2006, Sanders scored 100, Clinton scored 100+ (the plus for being "a prime sponsor of pro-animal legislation&quot

http://www.hslf.org/assets/pdfs/humane-scorecard/humane-scorecard-2006.pdf

but yes, in 2008, Sanders got 100, Clinton got 83.

http://www.hslf.org/assets/pdfs/humane-scorecard/humane-scorecard-2008.pdf

That's the last year they served together.

On balance, they both seem good on this issue, which is good for all of us!

That clears things up a bit.

It has always been my experience that animal lovers are Dems. Nice to know that BOTH of our candidates have the interest of the fur babies at heart.

I am not surprised. Every new data point I get on him makes me like him more.

The Clintons also had a chocolate lab named Buddy who they got near the end of Bill Clinton's second term. Tragically, Buddy was hit by a car and killed at age 4 when he ran out of the Clinton's house after a contractor. The Secret Service was supposed to be watching him as neither Bill or Hillary was home. According to Wiki, the Clintons got another chocolate lab named Seamus in 2005.

it is worth mentioning about any politician and especially Bernie Sanders.

Yes, the Clintons had Socks - although he was adopted, they gave him to Betty Currie when the Clintons left the White House...Socks didn't get along with their dog Buddy.

As for Buddy, he was hit by a car - door was left open and he ran outside. I'll leave it to the readers to argue why the Clintons didn't have a fenced in yard so that their animal wouldn't be exposed to traffic.
