No ash smudges on Newt's and Rick's foreheads?
Stephen Colbert had one on his.
After the two of them have been wearing their religion on their sleeves in recent weeks -- particularly through the contraception controversy, particularly with Newt claiming if Obama is elected, he will destroy the Catholic Church on Day One -- I would've thought Rick and Newt would do what devout Catholics are supposed to do on Ash Wednesday.
Political expediency seems to be the determining factor.

(8,976 posts)This is a catholic mark. You is or ain't. If you is "Catholic" it ain't optional. It is an object of faith. They didn't display it because it is a minority religious sign. As an ex-catholic either declare your faith or deny it.

(129,800 posts)I know what it is, and I know it is retained until it wears off. Assuming they obtained it earlier today, it is reasonable to think it has worn off. I have no interest in suggesting they deliberately didn't display it for some unknown reasons.
I don't play their games, and hope that DUers and other Dems don't either.

(7,113 posts)You feel this is not "real crap" worthy to complain about, yet you took time to complain about my complaining about it.
Funny, that.

(129,800 posts)I simply noted it.
'Real crap' includes all the b.s. and lies the repugs spewed tonight.

(7,113 posts)But seriously, these guys Newt and Rick are supposedly so friggin devout in their religion they're demanding that women who aren't even Catholic be deprived of basic insurance coverage for contraception if their boss is Catholic. YET, these guys can choose to ignore Catholic teachings and rituals for themselves when doing so is inconvenient to THEM!
I do NOT think this is trivial, but rather it exemplifies the basic hypocrisy of these people who seem to think they'e running for Pope instead of president.

I am not willing to say they 'choose to ignore Catholic teachings and rituals' for the reason you suggest, and would much rather spend our time and efforts on substantive matters; there are plenty of them.

(8,976 posts)It don't fade away. You are catholic or are not. My people have marks on their heads. Deliberately taking the mark off is denying your faith and two supposed "Catholics" did that tonight
elleng
(129,800 posts)and have numerous Catholic friends and relations. There is no evidence that the two are denying their faith, and I wouldn't suggest they are, unlike repugs who suggest similar things about President Obama.
You do NOT know that two Catholics DELIBERATELY took the mark off tonight.

(4,846 posts)There is no rule saying how long they must stay on, and no rule saying you must get them in the first place, they aren't a sacrament. Who knows they could have had them sprinkled on their heads instead.

(4,846 posts)And like I said there is no rule about wearing it. In Europe they just sprinkle the ashes on your head, you can request your priest do the same here. Its a non issue and considering there are so many variables, its not really worth anyone's time.
