2016 Postmortem

With Bernie Sanders now slightly ahead of Clinton nationally in the latest Bloomberg poll, its time to reevaluate the meaning of pragmatism. Hillary Clinton might be ahead of Bernie Sanders in delegates, but Vermonts Senator has a monopoly on political momentum. Sadly, his opponent has a monopoly on controversy, and will face FBI interviews in the near future. A Los Angeles Times article titled Clinton email probe enters new phase as FBI interviews loom highlights why Clintons campaign is stuck in political quicksand:
Much, much more at link.

(50,130 posts)Its time for Democrats to deal with reality, not just allegiance to a political icon, and rally around the only candidate not linked to an FBI investigation, and other controversies. With recent victories and future wins ahead, Bernie Sanders has all the political momentum heading towards Election Day. Most importantly, Bernie Sanders is the only leading candidate with positive favorability ratings in 2016.
Hillary Clinton has negative favorability ratings in ten national polls. When people forget about Trumps rallies, and the billionaire pivots to his former identity as a Democrat (I probably identify more as a Democrat), then the Clinton campaign is in big trouble.
In terms of these favorability polls, Hillary Clinton holds negative ratings by an over 10-point margin in 9 of these polls.
The fact that in 9 out of 10 national polls, Clinton is viewed in a negative manner by an over 10-point margin should worry anyone fearing Trump, or a Republican White House.

(12,689 posts)Whatever this author is drinking must be high proof, because their mind is addled. On no planet do you asked the candidate with a double digit popular vote lead and a big delegate lead to defer to the opposition. The arrogance and entitlement of such a request is stunning.

This is same thing I get called on by people on GOP forums. They always say Dems are not critical thinkers.

(1,019 posts)Oh, right, only 1 shows Bernie leading, that's why. Clinton's still +9 on the average polling.
Beacool
(30,247 posts)Sanders is ahead on that poll by a whopping 1%. Oh no, Hilary should quit the race today!!!!
P.S. Hillary is ahead in every other poll.

(24,412 posts)The delegate math will determine the nominee, not some subjective notion of "political momentum" (which Hillary Clinton actually has more of in terms of votes/delegates). While the race is obviously not "over" yet, Clinton still has a healthy lead and a much more realistic path to the nomination than Sanders does. I also wouldn't hang your hat on FBI interviews removing Clinton from contention either (I know that it's every Republican and some Sanders supporter's fondest wish). An interview does NOT mean that they will find wrongdoing. I suppose that now we should believe that getting interviewed by the police means that one is automatically guilty of something? Does anybody remember, "Innocent until proven guilty"? Bueller?

(14,195 posts)Because I just don't see the FBI spending 150 agents time investigating something unless they have a pretty good idea something criminal occurred.

(24,412 posts)Bernie has to blowout pretty much all of the remaining contests, which, odds are, he won't. Anyway, no matter what, as long as she walks into the convention with the majority of pledged delegates, she will be the nominee.

If Bernie had earned the nomination then this article wouldn't be necessary.
If the voters agree with this article then there should be no problem. Hillary will start to lose everywhere.
But what if that doesn't happen? What if Hillary wins NY and PA and NJ and CA? Do we still give the nomination to Bernie if he gets fewer delegates and fewer votes?
Don't the voters have the right to turn down Bernie's candidacy? And if defeating him at the polls isn't the way of doing that....what is?
