Related: About this forumMormon voters wary of too much public support for Romney
Sandhya Somashekhar, Feb. 27, 2012 Washington Post
MESA, Ariz. Among the customers browsing the light-infused Jesus paintings and spiritually tinged volumes of a Mormon bookstore here, you will find some of Mitt Romneys most passionate supporters. But dont expect them to go starting a Mormons for Mitt group anytime soon.
Mormons, one of Romneys most loyal voting blocs, are often quiet about their support. That might be because the church discourages political involvement. But Mormon voters also describe another source of personal reticence the danger they see in associating Romney too closely with his faith.
Many say they are convinced that suspicion about their little-known religion has at least partially prevented him from cementing his front-runner status. And they neither want to draw negative attention to their faith nor hurt his chances for the presidency.
Romney seems to have a kind of ceiling, and I think its from a fear that he might be too tied to the church, said Walt Tranmer, 71, as he left the bookstore on a recent morning. Its too bad that kind of animosity still exists.

The LDS church discourages political involvement? Explain California Proposition 8, then.

(6,271 posts)Mormon families produce gay children, they flee to California for freedom, and the Mormons pursue them here with Prop Hate.
Mitt has to take the fall for that. Karma.
Tell us again how your greatgreatgrandfather ran off to Mexico for marriage equality, Mitt. Never get tired of that story.

I get that they are afraid of the scrutiny the church will endure if Willard is the nominee, it won't be good for them when the flashlight is being shined.

(28,151 posts)Yeah, the Mormon church discourages political activity. And I'm the queen of America.
They just know that to be too closely associated with that bigoted, hate-filled cult is bad for one's image.

(877 posts)They're keeping quiet for now, but when it counts, with the votes and the money, they'll be screaming as loud as possible. Remember Prop 8.
The only way to count him out is if he doesn't get the nomination. If he does, we need to be very very vigilant. . .
