I love how easy it is to show Hillary up as a shill for the only constituency she's ever truly cared about.

Bernie was fighting for civil rights. You can appreciate that people were willing to get arrested to fight for civil rights, or shit on them for it. Your decision, of course - but it speaks volumes about what's in your heart.
You don't have to agree with his politics but attacking people BECAUSE they were involved in that fight is beyond ugly.

(54,770 posts)protest. It's pretty close to a photo op. I'm not saying Sanders didn't do something worthy, but it does look like a college protest, not what the real Civil Rights icons risked. Then Sanders and his supports trashed every Democratic icon who didn't endorse him, and some were downright racist about it too.
thesquanderer
(11,990 posts)It was not a college protest (not that there's anything to be ashamed of there, and he was a college activist as well).
I doubt Bernie was looking for photo ops in 1963.
Also, when did Sanders "trash" a Democratic icon who didn't support him?

I grew up going to a house with a pope doll that was changed for the seasons of the year. I did the stations of the cross, I lit candles and prayed to a bloody Christ sitting on the saddest depiction of Mother Mary. Oh, let them at it.

2. We should have a national minimum wage of $15 per hour.
3. We should limit our foreign interventions and regime changes like the ones that made a mess out of Iraq and Libya.
4. We should have tuition free public college available for all.

(45,319 posts)The Holy Father Pope Francis address to Congress was extraordinary. With absolute clarity, beauty and moral urgency, Pope Francis called on all of us to be better stewards of Creation and instruments of Gods peace.
Standing in the very heart of our democracy, Pope Francis spoke to the better angels of our nature and of the American people. He reminded us of our sacred and inescapable responsibility to those struggling to escape poverty, persecution and war. He challenged us to rescue our planet from the climate crisis that threatens the future of our children and the health of Gods creation and to do so sensitive to the needs of the poor. His Holiness urged us to live our values and reach beyond our divisions.
On a personal note, my husband Paul, my children and I have more than 100 years of Catholic education among us, and this has been a day of profound joy for my family. It has been an awesome privilege to welcome His Holiness to the Congress. My deepest thanks to the Pope for the honor of his historic visit and the elevating, illuminating leadership he continues to provide Catholics and non-Catholics the world over. May the Holy Fathers message of hope, peace and dialogue echo through the halls of the Capitol and across the country for a long time to come.

And here's Obama's greeting to Francis, fully devoid of any mention of women priests, LGBT rights or contraception:

There will be plenty of opportunities for him to discuss issues with people there, even informally.

(1,089 posts)It's because Jesus named 12 men as his apostles. These apostles were chosen to spread his teachings after his time on earth, and that's just always the way it's been.
Note: I'm not saying I agree with this or that it's a valid explanation at all. I'm just trying to answer your question as someone who was raised in a staunchly Catholic household.

(50,254 posts)Nobody in American politics is going to be able to change the Church's position on women in the priesthood. Certainly HRC would never be able to, and we can assume she didn't mention it on the occasion shown in the photo I posted.

(10,565 posts)has nothing to do with Bernie or any politician. I just think it is pretty appalling that in 2016 an institution as powerful as the Catholic Church relegates women to second class status. I haven't heard any good rationales yet. I'm a member of an inclusive church that has a female pastor and we haven't been struck by lightning yet! I remember when the current Pope was installed there was an outpouring of disdain for the institution on DU for it's sexism. Guess it's cool now. Carry on.

Goblinmonger
(22,340 posts)It will be appreciated. What usually happens is that people that point that out are called religious bigots who just don't understand the awesomeness of the Pope Frank.
It's good to see another ally. Hope to see you fighting the good fight. You should come to the Religion forum. There are many there that don't want to deal with the bigotry of the Pope and the RCC when it comes to women, LGTBQ, and other issues. And who ignore the child rape scandals.
Here, I'll make it easy for you. Come on over. http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1218
Or is this just a means to try and criticize Sanders?
I'm guessing it's that. Right?
In which case, two things:
1. So the Jewish guy is responsible for the dogma of the RCC? Seems silly.
2. He has already said that he doesn't agree with the pope on issues of women and gay rights. Has Clinton said the same thing?
