CALCULUS: The NRA Spent Thousands to Get Bernie Elected Then He Voted With ThemBy Susan Madrak
April 10, 2016
For the entire 2016 election, voters have been subjected to an insistent narrative that Bernie Sanders is a model of progressive purity while Hillary Clinton is an unprincipled, calculating politician in the pocket of special interests. We strongly reject that false frame and have repeatedly argued that all politicians make difficult choices, some good, some not so good. Bernie isnt exempt from that reality.
Bernies history on guns is hardly the model of progressive purity. During a recent Morning Joe appearance, he was defensive when asked to comment on New York Gov. Andrew Cuomos assessment that on gun manufacturer immunity, Bernie made a political decision on a moral issue.

(45,251 posts)and did a mailing for a drop in the bucket as far as budgets go. There is no evidence the mailing got Bernie elected. The NRA never spent another dime on Bernie and consistently gave him an F rating until a couple of years ago, when it went to D-. By contrast, Governors Dean and Shumlin, both of whom endorsed Hillary had A ratings.
The dishonestly of this kind crap is disgraceful.

(11,996 posts)Good. Being from up-state NY, an NRA rating of D- isn't exactly gonna go over too well.

(47,803 posts)Hillary Clintons campaign will hold a fundraiser in Washington on March 21 that will feature as one of its hosts Jeff Forbes, who until the end of last year worked as a lobbyist for the National Rifle Association.
Forbes, a former chief of staff to former Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), was registered as a lobbyist for the NRA Institute from 2009 until the end of 2015 on issues such as protecting Second Amendment rights, and regulation and gun control, according to lobbying disclosures. He donated $2,700 to the Clinton campaign in April when he was still registered to lobby against gun control. In addition, a colleague at his Forbes-Tate lobbying shop, Elizabeth Greer, also donated $2,700 while registered to lobby for the NRA.
The donation, and Forbes hosting of the upcoming fundraiser, may complicate a central part of Clintons current broadside against her opponent, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)

(50,254 posts)It's simple...if he had been totally anti-gun he would never have been elected to the House or the Senate from Vermont. And nobody else would ever have been elected on a totally anti-gun platform in that state, either.
He voted against the NRA on every issue other than corporate liability. That one issue is not more important than everything else.
And it would never have prevented Sandy Hook.
