2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie will be in Rome, away from NY for "40 hours"
according to MSNBC, taking away precious time to campaign. But, where will Hillary Clinton be while Bernie is in Vatican City?
Just wondering....

(5,275 posts)the other tickets, and for Clooney's on the 16th, are at bargain basement price of $33,400...
of course, only $2700 per person can go to the campaign...the good old (well, not so old) Hillary Victory Fund, which should have a pyramid as its logo, gets the overage...
it ain't easy to go from zero to $150+million in only a few years....takes a lot of speechifying and hobnobbing and such...

(68,583 posts)Of course Bernie does not think so...he speaks and it will be done...I guess...who needs a house and a senate?

(6,073 posts)If you listened to Bernie you would hear him say that he cannot do it by himself. He calls for holding your representation to a higher standard. You probably are also not aware that he is helping progressive candidates.

(6,073 posts)I have heard his speeches saying this, and the voters Bernie is bringing into the process will benefit the down ticket. There are intangibles like making a good impression on Catholic voters that can help the Democratic Party with that constituency. Morality, integrity, and new voters beat milking the money machine and creating apathy.

(6,073 posts)Many times he has said he cannot do it alone, the people will have to do it from the ground up. He has sated that they will have to press their representation to accomplish their goals. Maybe some just need more explicit direction.

(58,785 posts)get elected is extremely important. Our presidential candidates are de facto party leaders. If they're viable candidates, they are expected to offer "coattails" for downticket candidates to increase their appeal to voters and of also raising funds to help them get elected.
Hillary's been raising funds and speaking at events for downticket candidates all along, in addition to everything else. Nothing new here if she's at it this week also.
(I suspect one day of her life would prostate me. Even worse than bringing a new baby home at my age. I write this from our patio overlooking a marsh.)

(6,073 posts)Here is an excerpt from one of the e-mails he sent today.
"When I am elected president, I am going to need progressives in Congress who are willing to continue the fight we started in this campaign. Here are three:
Zephyr Teachout literally wrote the book on political corruption and is running for Congress in New York. Pramila Jayapal helped lead the fight for a $15 minimum wage and paid sick leave in Seattle, where shes now running for Congress. Lucy Flores is a progressive champion running for Congress in Nevada and one of the most courageous people Ive met on the campaign. I need them with me in Washington, D.C., and thats why I have to ask:
Split a $50 contribution between Bernie 2016 and Lucy Flores, Zephyr Teachout, and Pramila Jayapal for Congress today and we are going to win this primary AND elect a Congress willing to stand up billionaire class of this country."
"In solidarity,
Bernie Sanders"

(58,785 posts)Sanders is running for president. There are 435 U.S.ongressional seats alone--all in play, 34 senatorial, 12 governorships in play, thousands of state legislature seats, God only knows how many judgeships, as well as mayors, DAs, sheriffs, et cetera.
I like all three of these candidates and hope they all win, but extremely notably they and the littlehandful of others with Bernie are all well to the left of the typical Democrat who needs assistance from the party's presidential-level candidates. Hillary is working like a dog for them, but what's Sanders doing for all the Democrats fighting to gain or keep office in this critical election? Bernie is earning no gratitude and deserves none. Remember that at the convention.

(6,073 posts)If you think Hillary should be buying them with corporate money, who do you think they will represent? You or the corporations?
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)who give money to put people who share their goals and philosophy in government. You want those 3, right? Well so will some people who can give more, up to the legal limit. Bernie would ask well connected people in their districts to invite sympathetic people to someone's home, he would show up and talk to them about how wonderful these candidates are and ask for money and other commitments to elect them. Then he would excuse himself and take off for the next appearance on his schedule. He should also ask the crowds at every ralley.
But not for just a handful of particular favorites. Unthinkable as it was last April, we actually have a chance to get control of both houses of Congress, and Sanders will be criticized for being remiss if we do not take the Senate as we really should. He is not pulling his weight. He is not doing the job expected of a person in his position.

(6,073 posts)You realize this is a David and Goliath situation, don't you? His speeches include the fact that he can not give the people what they want unless they engage from the ground up. You all are stuck in the mindset that money is the measure of a campaign, Bernie's revolution is to make people realize that they have the power of their vote. Votes can overcome money unless you sell them out for the interests of others.Hillary has been campaigning for President from before 2008, she has an entire wealthy establishment behind her. To expect a Senator from a small state to compete for money at that rate is ridiculous. He did not have the time to campaign for himself in every state and you expect him to do house parties. You are free to choose the corporate power over the people.

(4,753 posts)buy Democratic politicians & their superdelegate votes. Last I knew, buying votes is a fine example of corruption... as is money laundering (See DNC, 33 State Democratic Committees & the Hillary Victory Fund).

Half the country was dying from that stupid cold/respiratory infection thing last month and they both just kept powering through.

(39,374 posts)Speaking on a program with Correa and Morales is a plus for him, too, I'm sure. On a personal level, he will get more out of this trip than he would if he stayed on the campaign trail. I think even he will be surprised how much this trip takes out of him though.

dogman
(6,073 posts)They need support. It is their choice where they accept money from. Do you really think the money is free? If the candidates followed Bernie's way, they would be increasing their voter base. Money from the people means you owe the people. What I think they need is a massive effort for campaign finance reform and end the selling of favors for campaign cash.

(10,749 posts)I'm at the point where I like Hillary supporters here as much as I like republican nominee supporters. What nasty and petty people. Look folks, if Hillary is the nominee I think all dems should vote for her. Same with Bernie. But the childishness of the Hillary people here is gonna make that a challenge.
