With Less Time for Voting, Black Churches Redouble Their Efforts"............Across Florida, black churches have responded with ferocity to changes that Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, and the Legislature made to eliminate six days of early voting this year including the Sunday before Election Day, which had been the traditional day to mobilize black congregations. In 2008, black voters cast early ballots at twice the rate of white voters, and turned out in significant strength on the Sunday before Election Day to help propel Mr. Obama to victory here.
Now, with Floridas 29 electoral votes up for grabs in a close race, Obama supporters are counting on a newly energized black base to put them over the edge despite the tighter window for early voting. A victory here for the president would defy recent polling and make his path back to the White House much easier.
In the newly revised schedule, early voting began on Saturday and continues through next Saturday. The churches, then, have one Sunday instead of two to move their members to vote.
In Jacksonville alone, black churches enlisted 40 buses and vans to move people who did not have transportation to voting sites. They also ran car pools, offered breakfasts and lunch, and helped organize rallies with music and celebrity appearances. ...."
snip
............lines snaked out of doors and into parking lots and onto sidewalks. A 40-minute wait to vote was not uncommon. On Saturday, before the supervisor of elections opened the main polling site of Duval County at 7 a.m., a line of almost 100 voters..... had already formed. Within a half-hour, the line had doubled in length.
I think the going sentiment was that Obama wouldnt get the same rally cry this year as last time, but Florida woke up a sleeping giant thats showing its defiance, Mr. Diamond said. I hate to say it, but Republicans probably would have done better if they had not tampered with early voting.

"Turnout for Mitt Romney also looked strong at several polling sites across Jacksonville, and his campaign was canvassing neighborhoods and calling residents from phone banks to remind them to vote early. One office had a goal of 5,000 calls on Saturday. (As of noon, 403 had been made.)"
403 calls out of 5000?

(21,056 posts)I'll give a thoroughly detailed retelling of my over 2 hrs to vote and the people and things said for anyone interested of my Florida early voting experience.
I'm mostly white, male, and middle-aged. The line didn't seem that long (maybe 100-150, so I figured 90 min), but we have about a dozen state ballots to vote on, and I'm sure plenty decided to read them while voting instead of reading them beforehand (by the way FL voters, just remember vote NO on #1, 6, 8 & 10!)
The line was about half white, 40% black, and 10% other races. Most of the white folk were 20-30, and several seemed grouped together to vote for the president, had buttons and shirts or were just vocally talking about what they'd heard the day before. Most of the people there were men who came alone. Most of the women were with another man or woman. After standing in line, and listening to every conversation in the snake line that gave me ample opportunity to hear things, I'd easily put the support for the pres at 70% based on those who had convos with me or near me, shirts, buttons, sneering looks by people who overheard others talking (LOL), and so forth. It is a solidly leaning GOP county. There were some flag shirt wearing types who were obviously anti-Obama, and the one in front of me who I pegged for a Romney voter got into the voting area, and made such a huge black mark for Romney that he asked if it would still count in the machine (he came to where I was getting checked in and laid it in front of me). He wanted to make sure his Romney vote is counted, dammit! lol...
I'm sure it was very disappointing to see for the Repubs, all the Obama support. One older white lady with an Obama hat said Republicans were mean and cruel people, and another older lady overheard her, and said, "there's mean people on both sides", I thought they might start yelling, so I spoke peaceful words (we're all Americans is what's important). She was right in this instance, because the older white security guard who was definitely a power hungry right-winger didn't even offer to have her (she had a cane) sit at the front and wait for her spot in the line to come to the voting area when she asked him for a jump to the front after about an hour, so I approached an older white male with election official printed on his vest, and he was very kind and sat her at the front to wait her turn, and thanked me for telling him.
There was a 50ish black man voting for the first time he said, and he was so ready to start it with Repubs, in a funny rascal way! He kept saying the Repubs were willing to destroy programs that helped them just to get rid of Obama, and saying words he can say because of his color (that's what he said to me about him using the words he was saying). I was a bit nervous what would happen with him being so vocal when he shouldn't say things that are politicking while in the voting line. There was a tall young white man about 15 feet away that kept glaring at him saying the stuff about Repubs, and after it was obvious he was going to keep going, and I didn't want him kicked out, I said, "it's probably best you keep your comments not too critical while you're in line", and he said, "yes, you're right, I should shut my mouth!" lol.. it was funny, but I was concerned the other guy was going to start yelling at him.
What I notice, is that there is so much division compared to the last time I early voted in '04 or '06. The hostility the right-wing hate machine has spewed the past 4 plus years about the president and ALL who support him has made many in our party ready to lay it down, to be blunt, and speak up about the hate. No matter where I go in this county there are nasty references to the president either spoken, or on signs/shirts and you really could just spend all day arguing with the bigots, but you'll wear yourself out there's so many of them, and most of them can't be swayed by conversation. I'll give it to the older Dems that were there who were vocal. They were very much on the offensive with their comments about protecting women's, GLBT, disabled and other's rights, and most said it in a great positive way so that no one could complain.
It was great seeing so many men and women of various ethnic backgrounds, ages young and old, supporting the president for re-election. What a trip. And to finish my 2 hours off, the machine broke when they swiped my ID! They eventually had me get swiped in at another terminal. I told the lady I wasn't leaving until I voted for President Obama and she smiled.
I hope you all are in line a lot less than I was though!

(36,286 posts)The next year, there was plenty. I took a look at the time, and more people were vaccinated the year of the shortage! I've been suspicious for some time that the Republican party's attempt to block the vote may back fire by getting more Democrats to the polls!
