The Romney presidency: The worst-case scenario

War with Iran. An ultra-conservative Supreme Court. Death to Social Security. Romney could be an epic disaster

BY ALEX PAREENE

A few moderates and liberals have lately taken to arguing that, you know, maybe a Romney presidency wouldn’t be too bad. He might turn out to be more moderate, or at least pragmatic, than he’s acted in the campaign so far. He might make a point of reaching out to Democrats in Congress. Republicans might regain their trust of Keynesian economics and actually do things to boost the economy out of naked political self-interest, instead of sabotaging the economy out of same.

I am not really convinced! Mitt Romney will be working with a Congress full of Republicans and his Cabinet and administration will be full of Republican political appointees, and that adds up to disaster, especially with the current, insane Republican Party.

As it’s the spooookiest time of the year, it seems appropriate to ask: What’s the Romney presidency worst-case scenario? If Mitt Romney turns out to be exactly the severe conservative he says he is, what can we expect?

War

Obviously we’re bombing Iran. They might be spinning some uranium around in a mountain, and we can’t let that continue. As Wired recently reported, bombing Iran isn’t actually as easy as it sounds. If we want to do it right, it’ll take a massive strike against Iran’s ability to launch a counterattack on Israel or Kuwait, followed by the much more massive strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. And of course war with Iran leads to a worldwide oil shock, probably.

he has been all over the map. I heard one person on a news program yesterday say she thinks he may say deficits don't matter in this economy and come out with an infrastructure program to put people to work. I wouldn't be suprised at all if she is right, the Republicans opposed Obama's jobs program but if they get back in control they could very well pass one of their oun then take credit for saving the economy. After all their main goal hasn't been helping the country it has been keeping Obama from getting re-elected.

It does not matter WHAT Mitt Romney is saying this week. That is all hype! At this point he will say anything to trick people into voting for him. I remember the same ploy being used by George Dubya Bush in 2000. He got some people to say, "Gee, maybe Bush isn't as extreme as I thought; he's saying moderate things." At the same time, however, the Bush/Cheney team was already completing plans and preparations to push their extreme right-wing agenda.
Mitt Romney will do what it says in that 2012 Republican platform, and more. He had a great hand in writing that platform, and his agents were in constant attendance at the final meetings held during the 2012 Republican Convention. All the calamities forecast in this essay will happen under a Romney/Ryan Administration. And more. Remember the New Orleans levy catastrophe? George Bush didn't think the government should do much. Romney doesn't think the government should do anything. "Weaklings to the wall!" is the rallying cry of this Ayn Rand crowd.

But that's because he's going to do what he's told by those mysterious backers and friends of his.

Sure, someone else came up with it first... but I can still agree. Romney will bring the Zombie Apocalypse.

I think it's partially easy to predict when you look at what happened in MA:

- Government grew larger, not smaller

- Job Creations under similar recession conditions grew extremely slowly when compared to other states...

- Taxes grew

So add his unwavering promise to push back programs to states such as FEMA (budget slashed), NOAA (weather prediction budget slashed), Department of Education (budget slashed), etc.

We also know he has a tendency to act first, then try to spin his actions, so any move on national security may have the most devastating consequences. He also KNOW he is weak on foreign policy so his reaction will be based on the records of his foreign security advisers.

His budget calls for ADDING a ton of money to national defense. The only way to accomplish that is to cut, cripple or delete most social based programs, Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, etc.

He wants to establish a "legacy" program so he will try to retool Obamacare back into some Frankenstein-version of Romneycare again and claim he saved the program.

and on....
