That's secondary in West Virginia to the coal industry being basically their entire economy Hippo_Tron Oct 2012 #6
Generally in a higher number than other states, yes. Obama only won 70% of the Dem vote there in '08 Drunken Irishman Oct 2012 #4

West Virginia voted for Dukakis in 1988, who was, "a card carrying member of the ACLU". It flipped drastically in a relatively short time period because global warming became an issue of serious national discussion.

And it's probably much worse this go around.

To put that into context, McCain won 92% of the Republican vote and 28% of the Democratic vote. Obama could only get 7 of the Republican vote.

Before Bush Republicans only won It In Landslides. In 1950's Stevenson actully won It In one of his loses against Eisenhower.
Humphery won It In 1968.It was one of 6 states that stayed with Carter In 1980.Even Dukakis won It In 1988.

They will still vote democrats for sttaewide offices like governor and senate but seem unable to vote for dem for president anymore.
WHich Is strange given the state's history.West Virginia was always more winnable than Virginia. That has completly changed.

There was a lot of chatter about Billy Graham wiping the Mormon Church off his website as a "cult". A lot of right wing Christians did not like that. Could we be seeing a backlash here where a state like West Virginia votes for Obama to spite Romney and Billy Graham.
