Scott Brown, Elizabeth Warren agree final debate should be cancelled (Brown pulls out of debate)

October 29, 2012

Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) will not participate in his fourth and final debate with challenger Elizabeth Warren (D), his campaign said Monday. Warren’s campaign later released its own statement saying that the debate, scheduled for Tuesday evening, should not be held.

“It is simply not appropriate to go forward with a political debate when a disaster strikes,” Brown spokesman Colin Reed said in a statement. ”The focus for all of us before, during and after the storm needs to be on emergency response and disaster relief, not campaigns and politics.”

Warren agreed.

“Elizabeth believes the focus now must be on public safety and ensuring people get the help they need during the storm and in its aftermath,” Warren campaign manager Minday Myers said in a statement. “With the concern for public safety and cleanup paramount,
Elizabeth believes the debate should not be held tomorrow.”

Organizers, including the Boston Globe, had planned to continue with the live event despite the impact of Hurricane Sandy on the state.

Over 170,000 Massachusetts residents have lost power, and coastal areas have been evacuated.

A new Boston Globe poll shows the race tied, in contrast to other recent polls giving Warren a slight lead. A Suffolk University poll scheduled for Monday night has been delayed.

I noticed that's the heading in URL link, and I thought of using that as the title, actually.

I guess Warren felt the most appropriate thing to do was agree, since Brown is likely trying to use this as a good PR move to show concern in an effort to bolster his declining numbers.
