In New Poll, Half Of Voters Say Private Server Was Illegal

Yeah, yeah. In two weeks, anything but happy talk will be scrubbed.

By now, most of the United States has heard something — via a news report, a Facebook post or an opining father-in-law — about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's email scandal. And half of them think her decision to use a private account and server while secretary of state was illegal, according to a poll released Wednesday.

Morning Consult, a media and technology company based in Washington, found that half of the respondents interviewed over the past week thought Clinton broke the law when she sent and received emails from hdr22@clintonmail.com despite the State Department's then-policy that "normal day-to-day operations" should be conducted on a government account. Another 22 percent said it was legal.

Clinton herself would agree with the latter contingent. Despite concerns over the security of her server and issues with public record keeping, the candidate has said she "thought it was allowed." Clinton has also insisted she used a private email account only out of convenience and didn't see or send classified emails at the time. When her email was revealed as part of the investigation into the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, Clinton turned over 55,000 pages of emails to the government. She'd already deleted 32,000 personal emails.

The candidate told ABC News last week what she did was a mistake. "As I’ve said many times, if I could go back, I would do it differently," Clinton said. "I know people have concerns about this.”

As far as we know, voters still have some influence on the outcome of elections, despite the private election servers that have spread like a cancer across this nation.

And speaking of private self-servers, voters have apparently been paying attention to this mess.

39. Yeah after decades in Congress

He's managed to get post office name changes and a veterans bill passed. Clinton's record for getting bills through because she's willing to work with others trounces Bernie's, plus she didn't live like a slob and off of others for the first 20 years of her adult life.

Bernard and wife are great with finances too! she does their taxes they refuse to release, after lying about releasing them and financing ..what a couple of gurus!

"Bernie Sanders disclosed between $25,002 and $65,000 in credit card debt in on financial disclosure forms filed in mid-2015. A campaign spokesperson said that the senator’s debt “rises and falls” with expenses like weddings for his daughter and niece that were held in 2015. "
Jane Sanders was in charge of a small private college in Vermont for seven years, it sank deep into debt while trying to expand its campus.

and his young adult days ..

"It allowed him to focus on what fueled him without being forced to discuss publicly significant details about his personal life — like his meager finances, his bare-bones living arrangement, and the fact that the mother of his one biological child is not his ex-wife.

He wanted to live in the country, he has said, and had some inheritance money from his father, who had died in 1963. They spent parts of the next few summers on the property, living in what had been a maple sugar shack with a dirt floor. The marriage ended only two years after it began, in 1966.
Sanders bought another property, in out-of-the-way Stannard, with a population of fewer than 200 people, in the rural area of Vermont called the Northeast Kingdom. Four days later, Levi Noah Sanders was born, at Brightlook Hospital in St. Johnsbury, Vermont; according to his birth certificate, his mother was a woman named Susan Campbell Mott.

He's been saying the same stuff for years and can't reach any of his goals because he refuses to work with others...and he is again proving that to be true again today.

43. This is a big problem. Turning facts 360 degrees around from the Truth.
Wed Jun 1, 2016, 12:18 PM
Jun 2016

Hillary co-sponsored more bills during her term than any other democratic senator. However, her record in passing these bills was rather pathetic. If we turn to authorship. Hillary Clinton as a Senator authored exactly 3 bills that became law. These were:

S. 1241: A bill to establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site in the State of New York. Bush signed the bill Dec. 3, 2004.

S. 3613: A bill to name a post office the "Major George Quamo Post Office Building." Bush signed the bill Oct. 6, 2006.

S. 3145: A bill to designate a highway in New York as the Timothy J. Russert highway. Bush signed the bill July 23, 2008

These are highway and post office bills are the ONLY bills Hillary authored that became law and yet this poster claims that she has a record of getting bills passed.

So this poster is making a claim about Bernie that actually applies to Hillary. Her record as a Senator consists of lots of authorship and sponsorship of bills but almost no results.

Voting, she voted for cluster bombs and against flag burning, true liberal votes (sarcasm intended).

This ultimately is the problem with discussing Hillary with a supporter like you. Facts do not matter whatsoever. You will just make it up to support your candidate. Kind of like Hillary herself.

47. I love how you just dismiss the bills she worked with other people to get passed.

Jun 2016

That's okay..its expected. Bernie can't work with others so of course you don't want that point highlighted.

In her far fewer years in the senate vs Sanders...

There were 74 bills that became law that Clinton co-sponsored. For example, she was one of 54 cosponsors on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, signed in January 2009 by President Barack Obama. (The fact that she co-sponsored these bills doesn’t tell us much about her role in their passage, but Bush referred to bills that "she has her name" on, so it’s worth noting those she co-sponsored.)

She co-sponsored one version but another version passed: For example, she co-sponsored S.1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in January 2009 while the version that passed was H.R. 1.

Sponsored amendments: She put forward amendments that influenced laws sponsored by others. She sponsored three amendments on a bill for security and disaster funding. The amendments passed in 2007 and the bill passed in 2008.

Bernie progressive? HA!

...because voting against closing Guantanamo was so progressive
because voting for 98 Iraq Liberation and the ousting of Saddam Hussein is so progressive
because voting for the 94 crime bill was so progressive
because voting to deregulate the financial markets is so progressive
because voting for more cops is so progressive
because voting against comprehensive immigration reform is so progressive
because voting against the Brady bill 5 times is so progressive,
because voting to dump toxic waste in the
back yards of poor Mexican-Americans and calling their city a "sacrifice zone" is so Progressive, lol! Bernie's is far from progressive.

Sanders has been in the senate for decades and with all the bragging over the amendments and his 3 bills passed, he hasn't accomplished anything of his agenda that he's been spewing since 1972. Cant he get anything accomplished? Where's the universal healthcare? the free college education? the reasonable income gap? He's had years to get these things accomplished . What's wrong with Bernie?

50. I responded to your post which attacks Bernie on Hillarys record of post office bills
Wed Jun 1, 2016, 12:48 PM
Jun 2016

Hillary's record shows she authored post office bills which was your claim about Bernie. Own your claim.

With regard to her sponsorship. She signed on to others bills or worked with others. Few of those bills got passed as well although that is normal. However, as you point out, adding your name to 54 others does not tell us your real involvement with a bill.

I just find you incredibly inauthentic when you start claiming an effectiveness for Hillary that has no provable component since she just passed 3 authored bills and a low percentage of her co-sponsored bills passed and you attack Bernie for the exact type of Bills that Hillary actually passed.

57. Add this to lagomorph777's EXCELLENT list
Wed Jun 1, 2016, 01:10 PM

Bernie Sanders' Legislative Accomplishments: A Partial List

The following is a list of every substantive bill and amendment Sanders sponsored from the floor of Congress that became law (substantive meaning legislation renaming post offices is not included). Many of the roll-call amendments he passed with majority approval — like limiting the federal government’s ability to spy on people’s library records — were removed from bills when the House and Senate negotiated over the final legislative text and did not become law.

Because the list is derived from Congress’ official database of floor actions, it does not include achievements like his insertion of funding for veterans health care into an Iraq war spending bill because that occurred off of the House floor while the bill was in conference. Nor does the list include what is perhaps his most significant achievement — providing health care to an additional 10 million mostly low-income Americans by getting Senate majority leader Harry Reid to add $11 billion in funding for community health centers that provide care regardless of a person’s ability to pay to the 2010 Affordable Care Act in exchange for Sanders rallying liberal Democrats who were considering voting against the bill once conservative Democrats removed the public option.

Those who mistakenly believe that a President Sanders would be powerless in the face of a hostile Republican Congress should bear in mind that he managed to pass these bills and amendments in spite of Republican control of both the House (1995-2006) and the presidency (2001-2008). Furthermore, it was Republicans in the House and Senate who compromised with him (not the other way around) on major veterans legislation in 2014. His original bill expanding services for veterans and fixing the scandal-ridden Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) cost $17.3 billion. The price tag of the final compromise bill? $16.3 billion.

It was definitely an effective way for him to get things done in Congress.

Not sure what you mean by "my candidate did nothing" - I like both candidates a lot.

I would say both Bernie and Hillary were effective in their own way, but also had some shortcomings.

She worked to bring broadband access to rural areas.

She amended an energy bill to provide tax exempt bonding to environmental conscious projects.

She introduced an amendment to increase funding to help modernize public schools.

She helped get an extension on unemployment insurance for workers during the recession.

She co-chaired the Senate India caucus, the first ever caucus dedicated to US-India relations.

She tried to establish a panel to investigate the Katrina response, but couldn't get the necessary support.

Generally speaking, her approval rating in the Senate was around 70-75 percent through most of her tenure

rush to DU to help spread it

Gee, that's never happened before.

About Morning Consult:

CEO and co-founder Michael Ramlet:

Morning Consult was created by Michael Ramlet, who also owns polling firm Paragon Insight and has consulted for Republicans. It was originally founded as a healthcare and public policy newsletter and has since expanded into energy, finance, and technology. In 2013 it hired Meghan McCarthy, formerly of National Journal, as its editor-in-chief. In March they hired Emily Holden from CQ Roll Call to kick start their energy beat.

Cofounder and chief research officer Kyle Dropp:

A lot, judging from the outrage and a state investigation. It has also raised thorny questions about political science field research, which isn’t uncommon, and its ability to affect an election.

The experiment, by the political scientists Adam Bonica and Jonathan Rodden of Stanford University and Kyle Dropp of Dartmouth College, sent mail to 100,000 Montana registered voters about two elections for the state’s supreme court. The Montana mailer, labeled “2014 Montana General Election Voter Information Guide,” featured the official state seal. It also placed the four judicial candidates on an ideological spectrum that included Barack Obama and Mitt Romney as reference points.

...

The use of the state seal also upset officials because it cannot be used on campaign literature. Groups wishing to use it must obtain the permission of the Secretary of State. Montana officials have begun an investigation into the mailers’ display of the official seal. Montana’s commissioner of political practices, Jonathan Motl, has asked Stanford and Dartmouth to disavow the mailers.

Stanford and Darmouth have jointly sent an open letter to voters apologizing for the mailer, and both are now investigating the project.

Senator Tester also said he would examine if any federal money had been used to pay for the study. (It was funded by a grant from the Hewlett Foundation and from Stanford itself, although the university has not detailed the source of that money).

The sharp reaction has veered into questions of whether the researchers were out to favor one candidate or another or whether the experiment was some kind of test of Crowdpac’s business.

Nah, no ratfucking going on here.

It seems like there is not a clearly identifiable punishment for this alleged crime on the books anywhere.

You cannot have an indictment for something that has to do with policy, not law. And, what was done wasn't against policy at the time.

It's interesting from an academic perspective, but I don't know that it tells us much about how people would vote... especially when we have other polls that actually tell us how people would vote (though obviously things can change in the coming months).
