I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me. I have thought of this quote from Ralph Ellisons Invisible Man often during this election season.
As an African American woman who supports Hillary Clinton, I regularly feel invisible. The media, the pundits, the pollsters and the other candidates refuse to see me.
Women (who make up over 60% of registered voters) and minorities are disregarded as if we are unimportant to the candidates platforms or the outcome of the race, and as if we dont recall the genesis of these smears.
Between working, learning, raising families, caregiving, bettering our communities, and engaging in the real world around us, we dont have the time or the patience to waste precious energy on fighting incessant harassment as the cost of participation.
The saying nothing, talking loud crowd (to paraphrase Earth Wind & Fire) may attempt to silence us. But we wont remain invisible forever....

(1,820 posts)Heck there are tons of posts just on DU about woman and especially African American and Latino woman that support Hillary. I don't know about the news I think it is because Trump sells and he is so scandalous that no one else gets any attention.
You are visible to me!

(10,164 posts)I'd argue vehemently that it's the POC who support Bernie that are the ones that are actually invisible...at least to the corporate media. One narrative of this primary cycle that's been absolutely beaten into the ground is the "AA voters are for Hillary" meme.

(10,524 posts)Thank you for your post. You are quite right.
Some of us keep trying to change things, yet there's been little or no real progress. I've been a feminist and staunch supporter of racial equity all my life. The results have been a few token gestures here and there that fade with the next news cycle. The lip-service has gotten better in certain quarters, but as we all know, the statistics show little actual improvement.
I supported Obama, and would love to see a woman president.
Nonetheless, after scrutinizing the candidates' actual words and deeds, I am a Bernie supporter.
Also, I'd just like to point out that there have been some very insulting and even abusive comments by purported Hillary supporters toward Bernie supporters (see, e.g., some of the responses to the OP at http://www.democraticunderground.com/12512128984 ).
I'm not sure who or what the purported Bernie-ites who may have attacked you actually represent (anymore than I'm sure that all of the purported Hillaryites who speak so insultingly to fellow DU'er's actually represent most Hillary supporters); but I would urge you to try to remember that they are a tiny minority and are unlike any of the many actual Bernie supporters I personally know.
Thanks for your post, and thanks for reading this.
