2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumFor heaven's sakes, Hillary didn't make this AP announcement happen!
Are you serious with these conspiracy theories? She was always going to win with today's votes, she didn't need to alienate Bernie voters further by somehow strong-arming the media into announcing her clinch 24 hours early. She deliberately held back SDs who wanted to announce earlier. She wanted to win the majority of pledged delegates before the announcement - she didn't want it to be announced yesterday.
This is ridiculous. The Clinton hate has clouded your minds! No politician in history would want to depress turnout before a primary they very much want to win! Hillary has spent a lot of time in CA - she doesn't need to win it, but she clearly wants to. This is far more likely to depress her turnout than Bernie's in my opinion.
(Side note: if I see one more Bernie supporter saying Hillary only wins when voting is depressed, I will post the word "CAUCUSES" about a million times, I swear!)
Ugh, I am so irritated with this this morning. I woke up expecting to watch results come in late tonight (for me) and celebrate Hillary's clinching after NJ (and poss CA) results came in. And because the AP (who has NEVER been on ANY Democrat's side, for god's sake, it's like you forget the Bush years ever happened!) had to be FIRST TO CALL IT like people commenting on a blog post, somehow this is Hillary's fault???
I am so excited that Hillary is going to be our nominee, but this is really pissing me off! Hillary is not the cause of every bad thing that has ever happened! Damn!
Sorry, I'm going to go calm down now.

(1,820 posts)My hatred. What hatred? Hatred for a woman who I pity? Not hardly. Hatred for someone I do t even know. Seriously. I have posted why I won't vote for Hillary and they are good reasons! All you have are accusations about me. As I have said over and over Hillary supporters better get a stronger game for the general election than name calling and being the victim. Clinton is no victim. She is rich and powerful!

(1,820 posts)I don't hate anyone. It is against my principles. I don't trust Hillary anymore than I do President William Clinton. My reasons are my own. From "bringing them to heel" and her anti-same sex marriage religious rants. Good reasons in my humble opinion not to support her! I was alive and watched her speak about such things with the backing of her Christian faith and she frightens me!

(22,336 posts)They've followed them in the past, and they're following them now. I don't understand why it's a surprise they called this when they had the information they had, and I don't understand why people think she was behind it. Although I have actually worked as a newspaper reporter so I understand how newspapers make decisions like this.
Silver_Witch
(1,820 posts)Sure we both were someone important and now we post on blogs.
The "news" is not the news anyone. It is about how many viewers and we get. How many clicks will come here if we post this! Fact sorry!
Today is a big day for voters for many other things. Here in Cali we are voting for more than our presidential candidate. Bow many will now not vote "cause it is over". I blame the media for this!
And more I am sad by any voter who does not vote because someone told them it is over!
gollygee
(22,336 posts)I can't tell if you're suggesting that I am making up having been a newspaper reporter. It isn't any great feat to become one. It only requires four years of school and a willingness to work for very little money, and they're willing to budge on the schooling.
Silver_Witch
(1,820 posts)Of course not! Being a reporter today is nothing like it was when you were one. People can say anything the want on blogs...so I take it with a grain of salt. My real point was now news is "reality TV". That is why trump is there darling. He should be careful thoiugh as soon as media sees how hated he is they will rack him over the coals to get the click bait.
This is not Walter Kronkite and the evening news anymore. Where we saw at least some of the truth. Now is it corporate media owned and operated by the 1%.
gollygee
(22,336 posts)I agree that blogs can say anything they want, but the AP has written procedures they follow.
Silver_Witch
(1,820 posts)We are talking about your post not the news from the AP. The AP is no longer news either they are bought and paid for and put out anything that gets them clicks. Hillary Clinton is probably the winner after today but ask yourself why they posted last night when so many are voting today! It is a corporate game to ensure she wins by making voters think it is all over except for the nice speeches!
As to your posts my point is that you or I can say we are anything and think it means something. It does not. You might have known or now know how you think something works like the media. But unless you own the paper or station the you don't know. Anymore than I know the secret plotting going on at the place I work. Oh I see hints and ques and watch carefully, but we never know do we!

(5,348 posts)If it wasn't this premature announcement from the media, it would have been something else.
In politics, just like in life itself, if our mindset is negative, then we will choose only to see those things that support our single minded mind set. If we don't see any, then we create something even if it doesn't exist.
Most Bernie supporters will support and vote for Hillary in the end. Others, a small minority, never will no matter what.
It's just so nonsensical. No way did Hillary want this to happen. She blew it off completely on Twitter. Blew off being called the first woman Presidential nominee in American history! That's how much she doesn't want to clinch it this way.

(11,495 posts)They are owned by the right, and I think it was all about keeping the fighting going between Hillary and Bernie. The idea that Bernie might step down after today probably did not fit their plans, and they knew that if this came out before today's primary, it would get blamed on Clinton and keep the fighting going between the two camps. The only ones that benefit from this are the republicans. Their guy is so damned insane they need to cause problems with the Democrats in order to help them get more Democrats to NOT vote in November. That's my opinion anyway.

NorthCarolina
(11,197 posts)tactic for CA, but I think it will ultimately backfire in their faces. It was a risk move for sure, but I bet they suspected an embarrassing defeat for Clinton in CA and so took this calculated risk in the hope it cuts into Bernie voters enthusiasm.
auntpurl
(4,311 posts)It doesn't help her! It's far more likely to depress HER voter turnout than Bernie's.
She played it down so far on Twitter - a national media outlet announcing her as the first female nominee for President for a major party in American history - and she completely blew it off.
The polls in CA were close, but she was ahead. No way did she agree to this. What kind of power do you think she has? For heaven's sake, this is ridiculous.
NorthCarolina
(11,197 posts)Now they will likely say something to the effect of "she could have won except for that damn announcement made Hillary supporters stay home". I guess that's better than reporting the truth.

(7,820 posts)Just in time for them to call it before the Primaries did not do so without the campaign's ok. This was coordinated. If the campaign wanted to wait till tonight, the Supers who "put her over" would have respected that. The idea that none of this came from the Hillary camp is just not believable. They knew there was a good chance of her losing California and they did not want to let that embarrassment happen. You're right- it's not a good move and may backfire. But I am hearing all over my Facebook feed how it's important for Hillary supporters to "send a message to Bernie and his supporters today" by beating him in California. They want this win.

auntpurl
(4,311 posts)She wants to depress voter turnout (which is far more likely to be bigger for HER than for Bernie after this announcement) the day before the California primary? When she was already going to clinch it tonight?? It's nonsensical!
morningfog
(18,115 posts)It may have nothing to do with Bernie.
Most likely the motivation would be to manage the message.
auntpurl
(4,311 posts)before they have a chance to vote?? She was already going to clinch with PDs tonight. She didn't even need CA. There is no reasonable explanation for why Hillary would have deliberately added to the "rigged" conspiracy theories, alienated more Bernie voters, AND this includes the assumption that she somehow has the power to force the media to do what she wants.
morningfog
(18,115 posts)It has nothing to do with clinching the nomination, so any of those points you made are irrelevant. She would have been declared the presumptive nominee today no matter what.
How could it benefit her in other ways? If internal polling in CA is weak, she is set to give her clinching speech whenever she wants tonight, and certainly before the CA polls close. No one will stay up or care what happens in CA. That's just one scenario.
Another could be that she is looking to the GE and trump. He's been getting hammered in the news, but being the last gopper standing, he'll win more states today. But now no one will care.
There are countless reasons why this benefits Hillary, including the obvious. She has been declared the winner.

(1,442 posts)is this one of those denial posts? denying that there was some sort of collusion within MSM to present this 'report' on the eve of a primary involving the state with the most delegates? One in which the OPTIC of, should HRC lose, would be reported on adversely and carried through until convention against HRC... makes the case of SDs coming into play and whom they should vote for
Your 'anger' post here is a joke
Politics is hardball and a game that HRC and the clinton machine knows well... this is just another notch on their board
auntpurl
(4,311 posts)She doesn't let anything get to her.
She will be the nominee tonight. Madame President in November!
HumanityExperiment
(1,442 posts)HRC and her machine, her policies, her history and actions don't represent progressive/liberal ideology, I'll continue to support principle over person each and every time... time to get the DEM party back to the ideals of promoting and advocating actual progressive/liberal ideology again...
You're right... she doesn't let progressive/liberal ideology 'get to her', that's been proven out throughout this primary
You have your footnote in history, you've traded actual ideology and principle for that footnote...own that, this stunt on the eve of the primary proves out how thin skinned HRC is, and that she's willing to leverage her machine to take the hits when smarter folks know who's pulling the strings behind the scenes
HRC loses CA the OPTICS are HUGE, it would provide the brushfire within news cycles to counter SDs current positioing prior to convention and those cycles would gather steam and HRC couldn't have none of that rolling into convention. What happened last night forces a pivot within media that HRC desperately needed...
GL in GE, you'll need it... if HRC's historic unfavorables can't be countered she's toast, she's polling even with Trump, and that's saying something, a candidate any other nominee would and should be crushing from the get go in polls but whereas HRC pulls even...

(47,803 posts)I remember the Big Blackout that occured inthe last two months of 2015, where Bernie's name was seldom mentioned, despite the crowds and support he was generating.
They barley mentioned his name and they were already assuming Clinton was the nominee and portraying it that way as if he didn't even exist.
It ws only after New Years when Sanders ciuld no longer be ignored that they grudgingly started giving him some coverage....And they they reverted back to the "The primaries are just a formality. She will be the winner" type of coverage while primary season was still in full swing.
auntpurl
(4,311 posts)Hillary has been ahead literally the entire primary season. There was no point at which it was close. The closest Bernie ever got to an upset was Michigan, and they covered that with relish. After that, as he slowly faded back into irrelevancy, the media coverage lessened.
I'm not saying that to be a jerk, but it really has never been competitive. Has Hillary benefited from name recognition and powerful surrogates? Of course, but that's not her fault and it's not some conspiracy against Bernie.
Armstead
(47,803 posts)It's not winning -- but it is not insignificant, irrelevant or anything like a landslide.
Close to half of the voters chose differently than Clinton. Ignore that at the peril of winning in November and governing effectively after that.

In other words, same ole, same ole.
I see now (with a cartoon hidden) we are working to painting Clinton, our first woman president, as "heartless". Oh she has a brain, but hey, she is a woman, what good is the brain, when her role is the heart.

Very Rw. I said fuck it, I get to celebrate. But.... I sandwiched it in between my alarm clock not going off, and dropping a huge glass of water on my laptop last night frying it. So she didn't have to sit with a Clinton win long.
