Related: About this forumTurnout is low so far in Alameda county.
It's going to hurt ballot initiatives.

(4,311 posts)I'm a Hillary supporter, and I don't want depressed voter turnout, no matter WHO is affected. Even the hated Republicans. Everyone should vote.
On the other hand, the announcement yesterday isn't stopping anyone from voting. I hope Bernie supporters manage to stop by after work or school.

(29,715 posts)only vote because of the president and the rest just doesn't interest them...until it hurts them personally and then they are surprised that it happened.

(10,164 posts)I don't care if it's occurring is a solidly Hillary area. Hell, I don't want it in solidly Trump areas, for that matter. Vote suppression is pure poison to a democratic society (which I realize ain't necessarily us any more...but it's the goal).

Bernie will win big in Berkekey, as will Hillary in Oakland. I think you'll see pockets of votes for each in the rest of the county.

(5,066 posts)They so wanted to cornate Clinton and they couldn't wait till after primary.

(7,010 posts)the media unless people come out later will be to the detriment of ballot initiatives.

(12,265 posts)I live in the reddest state ever, my vote rarely counts and in the primaries I don't normally have anyone to even vote for, but I show up. I have a 100 percent voting record over my 40 plus years of voting. When we move the first thing we do is register to vote. Lazy voters, and middle school thinking (my way or no way) is stupid. If you are an American you need to get to the polls and vote, if you don't stop complaining 24/7.

redstatebluegirl
(12,265 posts)ballot initiatives don't get people to the polls. I was not picking on Bernie supporters, anyone who doesn't show up to vote, has no voice and no right to complain about anything that happens at the polls be it a candidate or an initiative that is life changing to their community.

(1,089 posts)Some really don't affect turnout, others absolutely do. There are also statewide initiatives, county initiatives and local initiatives on most ballots in most elections. We've got everything from statewide to local/municipality/county stuff today.
It still comes down to the media for me. Anyone who doesn't get their ass to the polls because of what the media said is listening to the media way too much.

Its an honor and a privilege and to a political junkie like me, fun.

(1,089 posts)The repukes have no chance, but again things could be affected at least somewhat by the assholery of the AP yesterday.

(10,136 posts)The Santa Clara County registrar has some stats on its home page:
609K ballots sent out, 200K returned as of yesterday. That's a 33% rate, better that the last General Election. Total population in the county is 1.8 million, don't know number of eligible voters.
ETA: Wikipedia claims ~820K registered voters, but I don't know when that was. If remotely accutate, that means between 2/3 and 3/4 of voters vote by mail.

(28,270 posts)That's what I mean about Cali, how can you really tell what the turnout is with so many people voting by mail?
You kinda have to wait till they starting ballots really to get a good idea.

(6,399 posts)Never mind the screwups that do happen in weighting and going only to certain areas, but when a growing chunk of people are mailing it in? It becomes the landline v cellphone polling debate.

(7,638 posts)thorough is done, I can look out my window here in Chicago and say turnout looks low in Alameda but it doesn't become a fact until the numbers are in.

(32,342 posts)A new Field Poll estimates that about 8 million people will vote in todays California presidential primary election. The numbers account for 44.7% of registered voters and 32.5% of eligible voters.
The poll predicts that the voter turnout will be higher than the 2012 low of 31.1% of registered voters, but lower than 2008 - in which 57.7% of registered voters cast ballots.
The poll also predicts that 5 million of the 8 million expected to participate will cast their votes using a mail ballot. That would be a new record in California, where nearly 3.5 million voters cast mail ballot votes in 2012.

The AP's pre-ejac will probably affect these state & local challengers, keeping Christie's stranglehold on the state.
The AP should have waited 24 hours. It really does noting more than reinforce that media is tampering in politics.
Some of these jerks fund their own campains to the tune of $100K or more, since very few contribute to them.
They effectively buy the Democratic vote in their districts, and can't be challenged.
This really does screw the down-ballot folks. Thanks for keeping NJ Republican.
It's not like they haven't done that since before Boss Tweed's time, but it's becoming similar now.
