2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumNo need to watch the returns Tuesday, this is how it'll go down.
I did this four years ago. I want to stick with tradition. Here's how election night is going to go down.
*times might not be exact
7:00 ET:
Polls close in Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vermont and Virginia. Romney will be declared the winner in Kentucky, Obama in Vermont, while Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Virginia will be labeled either too close to call or too early to call.
Romney will lead in the electoral college 8-3.
7:30 ET:
Polls in Ohio, North Carolina and West Virginia close. Both Ohio and North Carolina will be too close to call, while Romney will be declared the winner in West Virginia.
He now leads 13-3.
8:00 ET:
At this point, a great deal of states will close and Obama will be declared the winner in:
Connecticut
Delaware
Illinois
Maine
Maryland
Massachusetts
New Jersey
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
Washington, DC
Romney will be declared the winner in:
Alabama
Mississippi
Oklahoma
Tennessee
Pennsylvania, Missouri, New Hampshire and Florida will be too close/early to call.
Now Obama seizes the lead in the electoral college 79-46.
8:25 ET:
South Carolina is called for Romney. He now trails 79-55.
8:30 ET:
Polls close in Arkansas and Romney is called the winner. He now has 61 electoral votes.
8:50 ET:
Indiana is called for Romney. He now stands at 72 electoral votes.
9:00 ET:
Here comes another big swing of polls closing. Obama is declared the winner in:
New York
New Mexico
Romney declared the winner in:
Kansas
Louisiana
Nebraska
South Dakota
Wyoming
Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas and Wisconsin are too close/early to call.
Obama now leads 113-97.
9:30 ET:
Pennsylvania is called for Obama. Georgia for Romney. Obama now has 133 electoral votes to Romney's 110.
9:40 ET:
Minnesota and Michigan are called for Obama. Texas for Romney.
Obama now has 159 electoral votes to Romney's 151.
9:50 ET:
WE HAVE AN IMPORTANT CALL TO MAKE. THIS IS A BIG ONE. WE ARE PROJECTING THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA WILL CARRY THE STATE OF OHIO.
Obama now sits at 177 electoral votes, Romney 151. The mood shifts to Romney finding another path to victory ... one that doesn't appear viable with Michigan and Pennsylvania being called for Obama.
10:00 ET:
Polls close in Iowa, Montana, Nevada and Utah. Romney wins Utah - but the other three states are too early or too close to call.
Obama leads Romney 177-157 in the electoral college.
10:30 ET:
New Hampshire is called for Obama.
He now has 181 electoral votes. There is word from Boston that the mood is dower at Romney head quarters.
10:45 ET:
Wisconsin is called for Obama, Missouri for Romney. Obama leads 191 to 167.
10:50 ET:
Nevada is called for Obama. Early voting is what won him the state. Montana for Romney.
Obama now sits at 197, Romney at 170.
11:00 ET:
Polls close in California, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, Idaho and North Dakota.
Obama is declared the winner in California, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii. Romney in Idaho and North Dakota.
With California's 55 electoral votes, the networks announce Obama has been reelected.
He leads Romney 275-177. Crowds are celebrating in Chicago.
11:40 ET:
Romney takes the stage to concede. Obama is expected to speak at midnight.
11:45 ET:
Obama is declared the winner in Colorado.
11:50 ET:
Arizona is called for Romney.
12:00 ET:
Obama speaks to supporters in Chicago.
12:10 ET:
Obama wins Virginia and Iowa - now sitting at 303-188.
12:30 ET:
Florida is called for Obama.
1:00 ET:
Polls close in Alaska, where Romney is declared the winner.
Sometime Wednesday:
North Carolina goes...
Does it matter?
Obama wins 332 (347) to 206 (191).
Bring on the inauguration.

(182 posts)8:30 - Romney takes a 'commanding' lead in Virginia with 7% of the vote counted. Network talking heads play this heavily. Don't panic.
9:50 - With Ohio in the bag, Obama can clinch the victory with just two of the following three states: New Hampshire, Iowa or Nevada.
The talking heads don't report that - instead they go on and on about Romney's persistent (but slowly shrinking) lead in Virginia, and express confidence that thanks to his brilliant and brainy VP pick, Romney will win Wisconsin. Ignore 'em.
10:30. New Hampshire for Obama. Almost there!
10:45: Iowa and Nevada race each other to be the state that clinches it... I think Iowa might come through early

Victor_c3
(3,557 posts)I printed out a map with the supposed swing states and wrote in the times that the polls close. By 8 pm EST, so long as Obama has NH, PA, VA, and OH, it will be very hard for him to lose the election. If he wins only those swing states, he'll be on the path for 269 votes. All he has to do after that is secure one more - which shouldn't be a problem with WI, IA, CO, and NV left to go.
All of the worry will evaporate after 8 pm if he gets what I mentioned above (NH, PA, VA, OH) plus NC or FL.If he gets either of those, he can lose WI, IA, CO, and NV and still hit at least 284 electoral votes.
The more I look at it, the better I feel. I can keep talking different scenarios in my head, but none of them look like it will take a long-shot for Obama to win.
The North East looks very good for Obama.

(27,435 posts)Last time, we had about 4-5 points more of a lead, so the margins were larger, and the race could be called as soon as the west coast states' polling was over. This time, although we have more paths to 270 than Rmoney, those paths involve states with much smaller margins, thus taking longer in the "too soon to call" zone. While I'd love a repeat of 2008, with the race being called for Obama at 8pm here in the PST, I personally expect the polls to close here, and the whole wave of CA-OR-WA electoral votes to be placed in Obama's column, with us still needing a TSTC state or two to put us over the top. Unless we pull off an upset win in FL or an unrealistically-early call of VA in our favor, it's probably going to come down to Ohio yet again -- in which case, I could see it taking until 10 or 11 here (i.e. well after midnight in the east) before we get a final call.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)The margins in Ohio are almost identical to the polls in '08 and that state was called before 10.

(173 posts)Thank's for all the work that you put into this. Wife and I are having a party tomorrow night with about 20 like minded Progressives, Liberals, Democrats, Free Thinkers, but all good caring people, in this haven of Republican wing nuts.
We're going to use your outline to follow the news and check them off as it goes. You did a great job
We had a similar party four years ago and many of our friends are coming back. But I have to say that after that first debate and the following weeks, watching Romney rise in the polls, we weren't sure we'd be doing this again. Except it might have turned into a mass wrist slicing ceremony!
For those of you who are having a party here's what we plan to do as well. I've attached a list of names that I printed out on labels and will stick them to the backs of our group as they enter (or their foreheads). They become the name and have to ask questions of others about them in order to guess who they are. It's a good ice breaker.

I know we're going to win tomorrow and yet, I'm having a little PTSD right now. I'm glad I know what it's from. That night was sheer hell. I actually cried in the arms of one my charge nurses, a fellow democrat.
I will focus on my work tomorrow and if no one tells me how it went, I will find out by how much Obama won when I get home Wednesday morning. And I will not let what happened 8 years ago mess me up. Despite the PTSD, I know you are right and it will be just fine.
And it isn't just Obama, we are hopefully going to deliver a much better Congress as an inauguration gift.

(17,301 posts)and the political hacks who call themselves judges, but are really kings of the US, declare it would be unfair to Romney if Obama wins no matter what the voters want. The US Supremes once again steal the election for their political cronies. Afterwords, the Koch Brothers are seen handing over briefcases to 5 of the so called justices. Thomas drops his case because he found a hair on it and hundreds of $100 bills spill out.

(12,716 posts)Edited - I had no idea that replying to a thread this old would kick it to the top of the forum listing! I figured after all this time, it wouldn't get kicked to the top, and only you would see it (there's some rule I read about in Help or Meta that threads that age beyond a certain point -- I believe that fall to beyond page 30 when listed chronologically by last reply -- become "archival" and don't get kicked to the top of the forum listing any longer. That's probably true, but I didn't realize that a thread whose last reply was on Nov. 14 in the Politics 2012 forum, would still be within the first 30 pages on Dec 27 in this forum. Oh well, live and learn. Congratulations anyway!
Edited - I see that posts with last reply of Nov 14 are listed on about pages 22 and 23.
Sorry about anyone inconvenienced by this -- I've written down the number of views shortly after posting and am watching the number climb
