2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAll Democrats need to be aware that Trump may not be the GOP Presidential Candidate
This action would mean the GOP insiders stole the election from the GOP voters.
The Democratic Party supporters should be ready to convince voters no republican is qualified to lead the country. Period!

(42,309 posts)But if the RNC pulls something and gets him out - I don't think the party will do well. As abhorrent as he is, he got the most votes in the R primaries.
The convention could get interesting, though.

(20,135 posts)There's no way they can handpick a new candidate without a full-on revolt at the convention. And that candidate would have no momentum and no infrastructure.
So bring it on.

(6,437 posts)With Trump, they're going to take their lumps in 2016. If they attempt to replace him and ignore their voters' sentiments, the Republican party burns to the ground.

(11,573 posts)A Trump loss will cripple the Republican Party at least through the 2020 election cycle. It will take them that long to get back the crossover contingent who will probably vote for he re -election and to get back onto a saner footing.
If they succeed in replacing him, the tea party faction will desert them for the Libertarian Party, and the damage will be permanent.

(7,812 posts)for any general election nominee and you'll also laying groundwork for down ballot elections and for future battles. Such an easy case to make, yet dems always flub it.
If Clinton and dem leaders focus on Trump's hands and insanity, not only will they be unprepared when Trump quits and the GOp installs a candidate who could actually run and win a campaign, they will have wasted valuable time and money. Moreover, attacking ONLY Trump while forgetting he is merely the culmination of decades of hateful, fact-free conservative rhetoric and low tactics just drives up his personal negatives so that even his supporters will be happy to embrace the replacement at the convention. Dems have to shine light on both Trump and the GOP simultaneously.
I believe it's more likely than not that Trump is not the nominee. He isn't really even running a campaign and has no money.

(13,419 posts)It's possible that if a coup, so to speak, occurs and Trump is replaced, his supporters could bolt the party which would decimate the Repubs. Or his supporters might not care much and the party coalesces in unity around the replacement - a unity the party lacks at the moment. I honestly have no idea which scenario will occur; but I think Trump will not be replaced as the Repubs will not risk a possible destruction of their party.

(325 posts)But is this still the case if Trump self destructs? If his campaign just implodes, and it is obvious to everyone that he is a guaranteed loser, then I think the primary voters who were for Trump then will see that he is not going to win and be on board with a swap.
If Trump's polling numbers don't tank, they probably cant replace him, but if he is losing, and losing badly, I think they can easily replace him.

(24,396 posts)need to realize that they are not electing a candidate. They are expressing a preference for a candidate that the political party may weigh however they want. That candidate gets elected by delegates sent to their respective conventions.
Let's face it, the indie parties don't even participate in the primaries. Their candidates are picked by a group of elites. The major parties used to pick their own candidates the same way. The only reason they participate in the primary process is because they hope that people voting in their party's primaries will translate into votes in the GE.
The SCOTUS ruled in 2000 that political parties have a very broad First Amendment right of association that allows them to run their candidate selection processes however they wish. There would be nothing illegal about the RNC dumping Trump at this point. The only real downside is that doing so would pretty much confirm the open secret I've outlined above, a secret most Americans are blissfully unaware of, and a secret that if ever taken to an extreme would put people off engaging in the primary process for that party.
Considering the free advertising and news stories that come with the extended primary season, it would be foolish to risk losing all that by taking a bold action, such as dumping Trump. But that's where the Rs are at these days, and it could happen.
