2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPolitical implications of Brexit.
I think this probably plays a little better for Trump than Hillary. Trump wants chaos and badness, and if the economic consequences are really bad and spread to the US, that could help Trump. Also, this is sort of Britain's version of "voting for Trump" so it kind of creates a precedent.
On the other hand, if people put those two together, and figure out that Britain's version of "voting for Trump" causes chaos and economic damage, it could help wake people up to how bad actually voting for Trump would be here economically.

(34,857 posts)Our stock market is going to take a huge hit tomorrow. The question is how long it lasts - whether it's just a temporary bump for us or a long decline similar to what the global markets experienced in 2008. If it's the latter, you better believe that means something to you.
In any event, there's far more uncertainty today than there was 24 hours ago - both for Britain and the world economy. Uncertainty is never good.

(11,256 posts)This vote was motivated by the same forces that produced the Trump nomination - fear, nativism, and racism. Now that it's happened, there will be real-world consequences, and they won't be good.
Americans will have four months to see that all play out. Hopefully, enough of us understand and makes sure it doesn't happen here. The first step is to reject Trump.

(13,419 posts)Markets and currencies are going to take a significant hit on Friday. Does this decline/contraction continue in the weeks and months ahead while fueling massive layoffs? Or is the downturn limited in size and scope and a modest recovery occurs by fall?
The Brexit vote is nonbinding. Hopefully the British Parliament will refuse act on the vote, even if there are political consequences for doing so.
There is absolutely nothing good for Democrats or the US related to this vote today. The British version of Republicans voted for Brexit and their version of Republicans are just as ignorant and destructive as ours.

(2,586 posts)First, if Britain does (as seem likely) break w/the EU in keeping w/the referendum (don't expect much courage from politicians on this score, in the UK as in the US), it will hurt Britain a lot economically, and might trigger a global economic downturn (many of the ingredients for such have already been in place).
If Britain leaves the EU -- Scotland will probably secede from the UK before the UK holds another referendum on re-entry, which is NOT out of the realm of the quite possible if obvious harm to British economy
Also, the importance of the EU as against the pound will become more palpable, and London would decline in importance as a financial center -- who would rise to take its place? maybe a city in Germany, maybe partly NYC and the China
If the downturn impacts the US, could help elect Trump president, with even further negative global repercussions over time
Note the importance of propagandistic UK media for years and years -- highbrow, middlebrow and tabloid press -- AGAINST the EU:
