2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo who would YOU like to see as Hillary Clinton's running mate?
Last edited Tue Jun 28, 2016, 06:40 PM - Edit history (8)
My choice is Elizabeth Warren
IMO, choosing her would unite the Democratic Party. and Warren would "destroy" whoever Trump picks as his running mate (in the Vice-Presidential debates)
If none of the posted choices appeals to you, please post a reply naming your choice.

But then again what do I know.

(28,340 posts)just a temporary fill in.
If she's the running mate, the sooner she resigns the better to run the clock out on the 145-160 days where a special election must be held.

This is a country of star-fuckers so if you think beating Trump is a cakewalk you're mistaken.
Our GOTV operation will be more vital than ever.
We elected the Terminator as Gov in one of the bluest states in the country here in CA so we have a shitload of work to do to beat the folks who think it will be funny or cool to have that orange idiot in the White House.
Maru Kitteh
(28,340 posts)I personally have no intention of letting up on GOTV, with the idea of landing the largest margin of humiliation possible against that ass crack. I am ecstatic about our candidate and our prospects for taking back large sections of the House and Senate.
You go ahead and work yourself into a lather of fear and concern if it suits you. I choose joy and optimism, and the cheerful work it calls for us to get there.

(871 posts)I believe the media event was crafted for the visual of unity within the democratic party. By the end of it Clinton's Crew, and the Progressives were all focused on Trump. Whether Warren ends up the v.p. choice...who knows....but unity was in the air.

He's bright, and more progressive than Hillary is, but either Warren or Sanders would be better choices, IMO.
(Choosing Bernie Sanders would unite the Democratic Party)
UPDATE: Al Franken is now one of the 10 choices.

(134 posts)His sense of humor would be the perfect antidote to Trump's antics. If he were given the media exposure that comes with being the VP pick, it would be a treat to watch him tear apart Baby Hands Trump and make sense of this chaotic and terrifying race.

(2,574 posts)Warren & Sanders both great, but I fear their loss of power as prime senators if they become a Veep in a Dem Senate
Franken is a brilliant, educated guy with immense media likeability and ease. Yes, his quick wit/smarts would devastate Trump; he would properly keep the Repub austerity sadists on the defensive thereafter.
Franken projects decency, integrity and real life accomplishment (as one of the creators of Harvard Lampoon into SNL... one of the most beloved and longest running of American tv shows). Maybe it's just me, but I would so look forward to him bringing some watchability to what has become a grinding, grim campaign that will continue into a strife /obstruction swollen & depressing next eight years.
If ever there was a moment in our electoral history that could use the unity, love and targeted "lightening up" of Al Franken, it is now. Franken was a huge gift to the Dem Party when he came to the Senate. They have never, ever utilized his talents and appeal strategically.

Labor Secretary Tom Perez is someone I like everything I've read about, but the one time I mentioned his name here turned out someone who's known about him for some time is hoping he'll be appointed to SCOTUS.

longship
(40,416 posts)Mainly because of the importance of gaining/holding the majority, especially in 2018 when things are stacked against us.
We need to keep our Senate stars in the Senate. And president of the US Senate is relatively a powerless position compared to a full senator. That is most important.
That is why I take my position that no Dem Senator should accept VEEP appointment.

Gun control is still one of the strongest if not the strongest unifying issue for Dems.
I'm not pushing him, and there are likely others that don't come to mind for me, but I think such a person could be considered without raiding the senate of our precious seats.

"In 2014, Heinrich and Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) traveled to a small island called Eru in the Marshall Islands.
The Discovery Channel sent a film crew to document their trip and plan to air the film on a show called "Rival Survival"
Heinrich & Flake had to survive for six days with few resources, including no natural sources of drinkable water.
After the trip, Heinrich told reporters that he and Flake decided to go on the trip to demonstrate that politicians from different political parties can work together, and in their case, to survive."

(2,586 posts)Yes, this is a very political choice, although all these figures are more progressive than neoliberal HRC. I am confident that there is no chance Hillary will run with Elizabeth Warren, for a number of reasons, including that they represent different political tendencies. If the way that the neoliberals held the line on the platform (more than neoliberalism itself seems to require strategically, and opposing the publicly taken opposition to TPP by Hillary) is any guide, there is little wiggle room for having the progressive wing of the party represented on the ticket.
Kaine is the most likely one, from news reports, and unsurprisingly very few here indicate a preference for him. He or someone like that -- Biden wasn't exactly someone masses of people wanted either -- would fit the bill of insuring that a neoliberal would step in in case of emergency. It seems that the Castros and Becerra are close enough to neoliberals to be at least possible candidates, tho it seems that the public is being led on in the case of Warren -- possibly Castro too. Also, these are figures who would solidify the Democratic Party for the future in terms of possible electoral successors to HRC if she gets elected, and future candidates if she does not, and yes in terms of the burgeoning constituency of latinos, particularly chicanos, who are the majority of latinos in the US even today (tho perhaps not for long).
I expect a neoliberal, but hope for at least a little flexibility. With Hillary Clinton unlike Barack Obama, there is no basis for even the hope (unmet) of serious deviation from the script of neoliberalism; I am agin it, but it is better than GOP inanity and possibly insanity. Someone like Trump (like W) is UTTERLY unsuited to the presidency, and would be bad for progressives as well as for America, and MUST be defeated, soundly if possible
red dog 1
(27,804 posts)Becerra ia now one of the choices..
as is Labor Secretary Tom Perez, who is liked by progressives, including Elizabeth Warren.
Perez is considered a "sleeper candidate".
In most presidential elections, if the person at the top of the ticket is not either a Congressperson or a Senator, then someone from Congress would be a likely pick as VP.
However, in this case, with that fruitcake Trump being the GOP nominee, and Secretary Clinton being more conservative than many Democrats are, I've included Labor Secretary Tom Perez as one of the choices; since he has support among the progressive wing of the party, including Sen. Warren, who likes him, and has stated that he'd "be a good pick" as VP

I've always liked Howard Dean; and I hope the HRC team will seek his input, because he still is very popular, especially with the younger voters, including young Independents, who might be leaning toward voting for a third party candidate.

but with only ten slots to put the choices in, I'll have to leave him out.
(He will make an awesome Governor of California though)

(4,484 posts)Warren is such a great attack dog and very well spoken. She has the credentials and the fortitude.
red dog 1
(27,804 posts)Also, choosing Warren would "unite" the Party.
IMO, if Hillary thinks she can defeat Donald Trump without having a united Democratic Party behind her, she is wrong!
Picking a progressive like Elizabeth Warren would, IMO, assure her of victory come November.
However, if she goes with a "center-right" VP candidate, many progressives will either not vote at all, or vote for Gary Johnson, and THAT would mean a President Trump in the White House.
(Personal request to Secretary Clinton..."Please ask Sen. Warren to be your running mate"

(743 posts)No mention of Cory Booker or Tom Perez?
red dog 1
(27,804 posts)Tom Perez is up there now.
I didn't put Cory Booker up there because I only get 10 slots to use as choices, and IMO, Sen. Booker, being from New Jersey, would not in any way "balance the ticket".
, plus Booker isn't very popular with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, unlike Perez who is.

(7,596 posts)Seriously, I will NEVER understand the infatuation this site has with lightweight Castro.
And although I supported Bernie Sanders in the primary, the idea of a 69-year-old president and a 75-year-old VP is fucking preposterous. Shit, I even think Liz Warren is kind of too old.

(12,265 posts)I am a little frightened of what will happen to her seat, but boy can she take on the Donald. Her delivery is such that she can say things Hillary cannot and get away with it. It reminds me of a West Wing episode called the Supremes when Josh and Toby interviewed Glenn Close's character. They came away saying "I love her mind, I love her shoes"! That is how I feel about Elizabeth.
red dog 1
(27,804 posts)Defeating Trump should be Hillary's ultimate goal.
I know that Massachusetts has a Republican governor, who will likely pick a Republican to fill Sen. Warren's seat, if she does become Vice President, but that sure is better than having Elizabeth Warren stay in the Senate under a President Donald J. Trump, isn't it?
SheilaT
(23,156 posts)before she decided not to? Or were you among those who said, NO, we need her in the Senate?
Are you all aware that the current governor of Massachusetts is a Republican, and so he'd be appointing a Republican replacement for her, should she and Hillary win the election?
And what makes you think she'd be in the forefront of policy decisions as VP, or doing anything of substance in that job? No, if she's not going to be at the top of the ticket, we do NOT want to be wasting her talents in the number two slot.
