*****
Republicans need to stop playing games because the American people arent stupid. Democrats arent going to stop their protests because he allowed a vote on a bill that was written by the gun lobby.
Speaker Ryan saw how effective the Democratic sit-in was, and he is absolutely terrified that Democrats are going to come back next week and shut down the House with another protest. Republicans know that they are defying the majority of public opinion on guns, so Ryan is setting up a show vote in an attempt to win the PR war.
The bad news for Ryan is that Democrats have already won, and they are not going to be satisfied with a vote on a bill that addresses none of the concerns of the American people.
It looks Speaker Ryan is shaking in shoes because Democrats are set to rock the House with more civil disobedience.

Let your Reps and Senators know we stand with the Democrats in the House and the Senate!
Let Speaker Ryan know!
We got to make them fix this! "No fly, no buy"!

(29,047 posts)denying rights to people because they're on a secret list? How is this not guilty until proven innocent?

(16,104 posts)We can fix 'no fly' lists and 'probable cause' and 'due process.'
We can't fix dead.
Known and suspected terrorists on these lists can go into a gun shop and legally deprive us of our right to live - this is the right they cannot be denied?
hack89
(39,171 posts)Ok. In that case let's suspend the rest of the Constitution so they can make us really safe.

Interesting political philosophy - not shared by the Democratic party, though.

(39,171 posts)How much blind trust we should give America's military and intelligence agencies .
yallerdawg
(16,104 posts)the Pentagon, the Pulse, and so many others.
We can fix "the right to fly," we can fix the "right to buy a gun/guns" - we can't fix the innocent dead.
The agencies and the lists have oversight - they can have more oversight.
But if your standard is the crime comes first - well, isn't that called anarchy?
hack89
(39,171 posts)My standard is that it should be really hard to lose civil rights. Does that offend you?
yallerdawg
(16,104 posts)all understand a 'due process' standard to mean a criminal prosecution standard.
Our terrorist lists include names from all over the world, non-citizens of US. Are they entitled to 'due process' or is 'suspected' a high enough standard?
If a US citizen shares that same name - we are talking hundreds of thousands around the world - does that require removal of the name, or just a way for the US citizen to clear his or her name?
The 'no fly list' is often identified as including US citizens at around 500. Should no citizens be 'inconvenienced' in the most difficult possibility of saving US lives from potential terrorists - who are demonstrably here?

(2,493 posts)Same concept as no fly lists. You ok with the internment camps?
yallerdawg
(16,104 posts)We paid restitution.
We fixed it.
hack89
(39,171 posts)They need to know why they are on the list, have access to the evidence against them and they must have the ability to go before a judge to challenge being put on the list.
That is how it is suppose to work in America . We don't let the government take away civil rights without due pproces .
yallerdawg
(16,104 posts)Astounding!
We have prisons and jails full of US citizens from one end of the country to the other who never had due process!
But suspected terrorists? Here's where we draw the line?
Come on - common sense. If you are on the No Fly list, you can't board a commercial plane, you can't leave the airport and head to the gun shop to legally buy a gun. Freakin' common sense.
hack89
(39,171 posts)Really?
yallerdawg
(16,104 posts)Called 'plea bargain.' Where is that in the constitution?

That is due process.
yallerdawg
(16,104 posts)Getting on a "No fly list" or "terrorist watch list" is due process - since you're advocating skirting around Constitutional due process wih 'plea bargain' (it's voluntary? ) - and if you've lost your Constitutional right to 'fly' no real stretch to lose right to 'buy gun.'
Now - you do understand that the proposed legislation in the Senate and what could end up in the House does propose timely due process appeals for the individual, 14 days in Senate compromise amendment.
We can fix this.
Don't you want to fix this?
hack89
(39,171 posts)Why do you keep ignoring that?

(39,171 posts)Due process is good.

(29,047 posts)innocent until proven guilty.
People can't legally deprive you of your right to live, unless, of course, they have a magic badge. Murder is still illegal.
In my opinion, no one should be deprived of any legal activity, including flying and buying firearms, without some public oversight.

(7,629 posts)will be loaded with a bunch of bullshit that democrats wont be able to vote for.
yallerdawg
(16,104 posts)Ryan could put the most liberal Democratic proposals up for vote and the House Republicans will simply vote it down with the majority vote.
There is compromise - and common sense.
Background checks for all gun transactions - shops, shows, internet.
For 'no fly' lists and expanded terrorist lists, have 'probable cause/due process' standard for legal residents of US who are afforded Constitutional rights by law. And budget for it!
They could do all this now - in both the House and the Senate.
There is no question the vast majority of Americans support these minimal gun safety proposals!
drray23
(7,629 posts)However I fear its more likely they will add things completely unrelated to gun control like defunding planed parenthood or the like..
