2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHas anyone seen Trump's disgusting new ad where he claims Hillary announced a middle class
tax increase?
She says: "We AREN'T going to raise taxes on the middle class." But the crowd was noisy and the audio was week. So Trump is claiming that she said "We ARE going to raise taxes on the middle class."
Never mind that her previous sentence was about making the tax code more fair for the middle class. Never mind that the audience erupted in applause.
And a GOP pundit, former Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer of South Carolina, repeated the lie on CNN tonight.
I hope that the Clinton people are on top of this. Just because something is blatantly untrue that doesn't mean it might not catch on if it isn't dealt with properly.

(27,814 posts)... but I did read this story on JPR. They are quite insistent that she said "we ARE going to raise taxes on the middle class", despite the fact that such a statement is completely inconsistent with the previous sentence, as well as being the exact opposite of what she has said throughout her campaign.
But it is just another example of how the alleged "true progressives" at JPR don't hesitate to align themselves with Trump, and repeat the lies told by RWers.
Anyone who believes that HRC would have suddenly announced that she planned to raise taxes on the middle class is, quite obviously, an idiot.

(10,908 posts)Hard to believe she intentionally said and meant to say "we are going to raise taxes on the middle class"
Unforutnately, I've listened to the segment at least 10 times, and without question in my mind, she said "are" and no way she said "aren't"

(10,908 posts)isn't there just because I wish it were there. And I didn't find the audio quality to be poor at that point.
I guess we're just going to have to disagree on this. It happens.

(68,582 posts)that purported to say she is raising taxes and you can clearly hear aren't...she starts out that the GOP wants to cut taxes for the rich...we are not going to do that...etc....total nonsense and Trump will look like an idiot for running the ad.

But we know she would not say that. Or it would be accidental if she did.

Or meant to say that, I agree. As I've said now in 3 reponses in this thread including my first one.

(82,383 posts)she clearly says "aren't"

It dishonest to say otherwise.

(37,428 posts)...but we were primed to hear it as the screamer headlines had it. It spread virally because it is consistent with the mythology than so many believe in.
But I admit that the lack of emohasis on the word makes an honest error possible, though the crowd cheering it didn't seem to have much of a problem.

Thank you for allowing for the possibility that I'm not a liar or a troll.
I was primed to hear something, anything after the "are" but I didn't, not in #3. Not after listening to the segment at least 20 times. It wasn't "lack of emphasis", I just didn't hear an "n" or a "t". Demsrule86 says its a doctored tape. Could be. So that's 3 of us that didn't hear an "n" or "t" in #3.
I noticed the crowd cheering too, and as I said in my #4 and my #16, it would be amazing if she said and meant to say she would raise taxes on the middle class.

(37,428 posts)The crowd may have heard it more cleatly, and they certainly got context.

(45,788 posts)Not how one would pronounce "are." And I heard "aren't," anyway.
In the context of the speech, she clearly means "aren't."

No problem. I say the exact opposite of what I mean, often. Well, as for "though probably not", I simply did not hear the "n" or "t" after listening at least 20 times, probably 30 times to #3. (On #10's clip I'm a maybe there's an "n" there)
>>Context is clear & her policy is clear. <<
Yup. I don't doubt that.

(58,785 posts)how the Trump campaign must have thought the media, "like, all of us," wouldn't listen to the video (and would have been the first to report if Hillary announced a middle class tax hike).
I mean, this thing cost real money. Surely they could have done better than to underline their own incompetence?

(49,002 posts)Remain calm and state her policy which is clear.
Provide the context which is clear.
There is nothing there for them to talk about. It is all distraction.
The way to deal with lies is to provide a quick and convincing refutation and then move on to what really needs to be said.

(175 posts)I hear "aren't," and her context clearly indicates it's "aren't."
It just makes Trump look like even more of a child. "Ahhhhh, you said "are!" No take-backs, you said are! Ha ha."
Plus, Trump's ad (which I haven't seen) just gives Clinton a ton of free TV time to say (over and over again) that she *isn't* going to raise middle class taxes.
Win-win for Clinton it seem to me.
