Beyond Narcissism

Charles Krauthammer: “Of course we all try to protect our own dignity and command respect. But Trump’s hypersensitivity and unedited, untempered Pavlovian responses are, shall we say, unusual in both ferocity and predictability.”

“This is beyond narcissism. I used to think Trump was an 11-year-old, an undeveloped schoolyard bully. I was off by about 10 years. His needs are more primitive, an infantile hunger for approval and praise, a craving that can never be satisfied. He lives in a cocoon of solipsism where the world outside himself has value — indeed exists — only insofar as it sustains and inflates him.”

“Most politicians seek approval. But Trump lives for the adoration. He doesn’t even try to hide it, boasting incessantly about his crowds, his standing ovations, his TV ratings, his poll numbers, his primary victories. The latter are most prized because they offer empirical evidence of how loved and admired he is.”

2. Much as I dislike Krauthammer, he's got this right.

And he also nails the reason Trump won't drop out no matter what the advisors and the polls say: As long as he continues to draw crowds and relish his primary victories he'll stay in because they are (for him) the best evidence of the adoration he lives for.

He is probably the most narcissistic man on earth.

Here is a description from a good article on the matter..

"The narcissist’s insatiable quest for attention, leads him or her to seek out a steady source of admiration. Where that is in short supply, the narcissist prefers to inspire fear or hatred than suffer the nightmare of being ignored. And unable to empathize, they are indifferent to the consequences of hurting people."

...nor desire to help people, which ideally a politician should have.

He didn't try being a mayor, or a representative or even a senator. Nope. He wants to jump all the way up the ladder to executive office on his first try. He's not used to having to climb actual rungs to get what he wants.
