2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSorry to see Larry Wilmore's show go
It was smart, it was on-point most of the time. I didn't notice that the host was black most of the time, but that was a damn bonus, a black man hosting a late-night show. Great discussions, great topics. I cut the cable several years ago but enjoyed episodes via the web.

(5,105 posts)I hope he continues to influence the national discussion.
What made him so great on The Daily Show was his serious deadpan delivery. Unfortunately, he decided to abandon that persona for his show and tried to be Mr. Cool instead. It didn't work.

(524 posts)He had a very hard road to forge anyway. Colbert's audience probably followed him to his new show.
I think he'll be fine

(2,542 posts)...so the decision to devote 2/3 of the show, both the sketches and the panel, to their idiocy probably had a lot to do with people tuning out. I know I stopped watching because Wilmore was giving a platform, through his Contributor Idiots, to every ridiculous anti-Clinton meme out there, from both the right and left. How "progressive" of Mr Wilmore & Idiots to portray the first woman to win a major party nomination as some kind of Godzilla monster, right? Right??
Wilmore's show deserved to go. "Pure snark" isn't actually as funny as The Nightly Show tried to pretend.

(5,811 posts)I had a problem with the anti-Clinton rhetoric, some of which was extremely disrespectful and inappropriate. My biggest turn off though was what he said to the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES at the end of his WHCD stand-up routine.

(2,542 posts)All it does is give the RWNJs cover to say, "Oh, well if he can say it..." I know he probably meant well, but still.

(4,840 posts)it's possible that hurt Wilmore's show too, as there was probably a lot of run-off viewers from Jon's show that would then stay up for Wilmore's.
Lesson: You can't lose two back-to-back popular hosts--- Stewart and Colbert--- and then expect the two replacements to do well. There has to be a well established host and show to draw in the viewers.

(42,770 posts)both Trevor and Larry be integral parts of the discussion - then set them loose.

(37,428 posts)They are tight ensemble performers as well as wickedly-clever writers.
They did great things on a daily (nightly) basis, and will be sorely missed.

(101 posts)But I never did get into the whole round table thing. I don't see his show often, but I'm sad to hear its going.

(28,079 posts)it often made me think.
I thought the round table thing wore thin and needed to be reworked but even that wasn't all bad.
Unfortunately, 63 year old white women aren't the demographic Comedy Central was going for with his show. I will miss the perspective he gave on some issues that my demographic wouldn't necessarily see on our own.
