Louisiana Governor Kindly Tells Trump To Screw Off After He Tries To Exploit Flood For Photo Op
In what the Red Cross is calling the worst natural disaster in America since Hurricane Sandy, Louisiana is experiencing catastrophic flooding. Thousands of people have lost their homes. At least 13 people have died. And a state that is still rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina is left to bear the burden of yet another tragedy.
Right on cue, Donald Trump has decided to opportunistically exploit the situation.
Having spent the week screaming at journalists on Twitter and re-arranging chairs on the Titanic, Trump abruptly announced that he and his running mate Mike Pence would be traveling to Louisiana to survey the damage. Until then, he hadnt bothered to mention Louisiana a single time. Its unclear if he was even aware there was a flood.
Telegraphing his play, Trumps camp suggest that by going down to Louisiana while President Obama was still on vacation, Trump cared more about the victims. Trumps Ministry of Propaganda, run out of the offices of Breitbart News, boldly proclaimed, Trump Visits Louisiana Flood Victims as Hillary Rests and Obama Vacations.
The cynical publicity stunt fooled absolutely no one including, it seems, the governor of Louisiana. In a biting statement, Gov. John Bel Edwards pulled no punches:
In other words, posing for pictures does nothing. If Trump actually cared about the people of Louisiana, he would break out his checkbook or start filling sandbags. The Republican candidate seems unlikely to do either. There just isnt enough publicity in those sorts of things.

(8,541 posts)It looks like Trump flys with a full tactical squad and I'm not surprised really. I'm sure Bernie had the same treatment and definitely Hillary. I can't even imagine the detail she has and deservedly so.

(41,984 posts)They can be corrupt, crazy, drunkards, everything-mongers (except for Jindal but trust me he's an outlier) but they are hard to screw around with and proud and provincial.
I'd love to see Trump the Builder forced to actually do work for his photo op. You know, one of those big construction rigs he's so great with.

(60,335 posts)It sounds so republican and they thought it would be good for their little boy to do the photo-op thing.

(28,394 posts)Its a brilliant plan, except for one thing: Despite the dependability of Mikes weather app, the storm doesnt actually strike North Carolina. In fact, it turns south and strikes Florida, right where the OBrien/Montez tickets was campaigning. It was a gamble that enrages Selina. Our horse did not win, James says.
No it certainly didnt, Selina snaps back. It fell at the first fence and got shot and now some French fers got it in a baguette.

resources that are needed for flood relief.

(3,335 posts)and because of the resources a visit from the President would require and take away from the assistance needed on the grounds, he asked that he delay his trip for 10 days to 2 weeks. He said that the HHS Secretary had toured the area yesterday and that Obama had approved disaster funds already so that cleanup and rebuilding could begin as soon as the water recedes.
I know the Repubs would like to make a scandal compared to Katrina, but there is nothing the President can do there but get in the way, that isn't already being done. The President has seen the footage of the flooded areas and understands the magnitude of the damage. Also, this was a natural disaster, caused by 31 inches of rain, which no one could have predicted, so the crooked media should stop trying to find a scandal where none exists.
