2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumManafort leaving means it's over for Trump
He's a sleeze, but he was correct in trying to get Trump to pivot toward normalcy for the GE. He failed in that, because anyone would have failed. Trump's response was to bring in a couple of smarmy, sneering far-right yes men who will rubber stamp Trump's losing strategy.
Bannon and Conway aren't stupid. Both know that their personal political apples will be polished in the RW world by having led a presidential campaign, even one that is failing and will ultimately lose big time, as will Trump's. They are taking advantage of the stupidity of Trump's naivety to advance their own standing in RW power circles. Their excuse when Trump loses will be that they were called in too late...but don't let that stop any 2020 candidates putting their numbers on speed dial.
I for one am breathing a big sigh of relief now that Manafort is out and those two RW nut jobs are in.

(40,416 posts)The Trump meltdown will be complete. At this point anything he does is frosting on the cake.
He keeps doubling down. He cannot help himself.

BTW - just saw this Nate Silver article which confirms what I said in my OP:

I think Trump really wants to win and will do whatever he thinks it takes to make that happen.

(24,396 posts)I'm really not at all concerned about such things, nor do I see the value in imaging that one of Trump's major liabilities is going to miraculously become one of his strengths.
You don't see Hillary's campaign roling over and refusing to attack Trump, as did his R primary opponents. No sir. She is on the attack, viciously.

(58,724 posts)As far as I am concerned, that is the winning strategy.

(58,724 posts)Bar is so low that anything other than a complete meltdown will be spun as "surprisingly effective".

(56,828 posts)The bar is now so low that I think even shitting his pants would be considered a victory - as long as he didn't shoot anybody, spank Hillary on the butt or insult any multiple groups of people the media will claim Trump has turned the corner and is now surging! ("Look, he only insulted Mexicans, but refused to take the bait on Cubans and Puerto Ricans! Amazing! Masterful!"
But, prior to the first debate in 2012, Obama looked to be pulling away and was up near double digits in some polls. Then, Romney did his etch-a-sketch routine and became a moderate for the debate and did surge in the polls. While it wasn't enough to win, it was closer than it seemed like it was going to be in late August 2012.

(34,845 posts)EVERYONE so far has died under the public spotlight. Manafort, of course, will rue the day he ever agreed to work for Trump. And what was he thinking? That being front and center at the campaign would somehow hide his dirty secrets?
Trump hires people just like himself: ignorant and with plenty of dirt for reporters to dig up. Taking these bozos out is like shooting fish in a barrel. Fish that leap AT the barrel instead of giving even the PRETENSE of wanting to not be shot
