The Invisible Man: George W. Bush and a Hole in History
Friday, 12 August 2016
By William Rivers Pitt, Truthout | Op-Ed

After Donald Trump blew into his dog saxophone and invited "Second Amendment people" to assassinate Hillary Clinton before she could appoint any judges, American politics went into China Syndrome meltdown mode in a way not seen since Preston Brooks beat Charles Sumner very nearly to death in the well of the Senate, 160 years ago almost to the day. Republicans who had endorsed Trump immediately fled en masse to Outer Mongolia to become anonymous yak herders, and witnesses reported seeing House Speaker Paul Ryan climb a large oak tree while muttering, "I hate this job, I hate this job, there's no place like home, I hate this job."

This flame-decked train wreck has been a long time coming, and the GOP has nothing to blame but itself. Begin with the serial defections from the Democratic Party after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, augment with Nixon's "Southern Strategy" to promote racism and xenophobia within the party base, and then inject that strategy with steroids under Reagan by embracing right-wing fire-and-brimstone evangelical Christianity. Lose a war and collapse the economy in the middle.

Despise the immigrant, demonize the Other. Spend eight years howling THERE'S A BLACK KENYAN MUSLIM TERRORIST COMMUNIST SOCIALIST FASCIST MAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE, YOU GUYS, EVERYONE FREAK OUT, season to taste with millions of guns and the paranoia they pack, put it all in a bag and shake it, and what you get when you crack the seal is Donald Trump: a racist, sexist, xenophobic fool who doesn't know that he doesn't know anything, surrounded by a growling herd of loyalists.

I must take this moment, after having read your recent post and analyzed it while simultaneously comparing the sentiments expressed by your words to my own sentiments, and thereby noticing how similar your feelings are to mine, thus allowing me to conclude that we are in agreement with regard to a style of writing for which is deservedly worthy of ridicule. It's clear that the writer attempts to to use such a style in a transparent attempt to make up for a lack of substance and to create the illusion that he's thoughtful and intelligent, which only ends up being little more than a dreadful and shallow screed for which the writer appears to derive great pride and satisfaction form such a showy display, and for which less sophisticated readers appear to be exceedingly, and mysteriously enamored and impressed.

Think on it. Even with his towering hubris, Donald Trump knows better than to bring up Bush, but instead will lay the whole mess on Obama and Clinton regardless of the incoherence of the argument, because it's red meat for the base. Clinton wants no part of having Bush in the discussion because it underscores her craven Iraq War vote and its calamitous consequences. The corporate "news" media? Forget it. They hauled water for him like Gunga Din in the name of ratings and advertising dollars, and are now slicked to the elbows in innocent blood. Best not to bring all that up. But there is truth in pointing out that Hillary's IWR vote has taken away a political hammer she otherwise could have used against Republican foreign policy and anyone who was for the war.

Personally, the IWR vote is the reason I refused to support John Kerry, Joe Biden, or Hillary Clinton in Democratic primaries. Here at DU we knew the case for war was bogus and predicted the opening of pandora's box. We knew about PNAC, and once given the authority Bush was going to invade.

We desperately needed strong Democratic leaders to stand up and speak truth to power, and some did. Those who helped enable Bush forever lost my vote in Dem primaries.

So, to answer your question, I accept what Will wrote because it is essentially the truth.

And I'm no fan, to say the least, of this particular article--it would be an easy political feat to place the Iraq war solidly on the backs of the ones that engineered it. It's a choice not to for whatever reason. I can think of a few. Bush is old news.

That being said, I strongly disagreed with the IWV. I understand the "why"--she's explained it many, many times, but as you say, we all knew. We were all, however, NOT the Senator of New York.

It became apparent in early 2003 that Bush was going to launch the war despite UN inspectors being allowed access throughout Iraq, essentially betraying those who foolishly trusted him with that authority. THAT was the time for Democratic leaders to stand up and insist the inspectors be allowed to finish their work.

Hillary didn't admit her vote was a mistake and apologize until the operation became a fiasco. In other words, when it became politically necessary to do so. To this day I have strong reservations about her judgment in the use of military force.

I will, of course, vote for HRC in the general election. Trump is a dangerous abomination and must not only be defeated, but crushed.

I will take that a step further and say that fiasco was a given when GW was given war powers in 2002. Though we saw that pretty clearly here at DU, Dems who gave GW their vote either didn't see it or made a political calculation that it was politically advantageous to appear tough on national security.

Afghanistan in and of itself was a tremendously difficult undertaking. Shifting focus and resources to Iraq -- regardless of the outcome there -- was a colossal blunder. The only "grave and gathering threat" posed by Iraq was the very real possibility that the inspectors would render a finding of no WMD, then the "mushroom clouds" would vanish along with the official rationale for the war.

Hillary Clinton has many fine qualities. Her relentless efforts for good causes throughout her public life are to be commended, and she is tough as nails. Decades of vilification by the right is little more than blowing smoke in the cynical expectation that people will eventually conclude where there is smoke there must be fire.

I have other reasons for not being a fan of the Clintons beyond her IWR vote, but I won't go into them here. Suffice it to say I believe significant change is needed before we truly have a government Of, By and For The People.

The article is overwhelmingly an attack on the GOP, and a brilliant one. One little dig at the Democratic nominee, based in fact, and the shrill level in here goes up to painful levels.

I miss the days when there was a tolerance of opinion in DU. Since The Purge this place has sometimes sounded like raging Prohibitionists circa 1920. If there is even a hint of disloyalty to the echo chamber, no matter how poignant the article is in its totality, the author is ostracized in the most virile fashion.

And however colourful the language used by anti-establishment voices such as Pitt, underneath it all there is the fabric of truth. The "oligathy" had become nearly meaningless as it is basically misused and implies an Illuminati type organization of a few rich people, rather than an entire economic system that needs proper and stringent regulations against excess, while at the same time, protecting the actual economic balance,

As the Princeton University study a couple of years ago concluded the USA is now checking all the boxes on.

Multivariate analysis indicates that economic elites and organised groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on US government policy, while average citizens and mass-based interest groups have little or no independent influence.

I myself am positionally somewhere between DU and JPR. I don't believe in the "burn the house down" theory over there and am supporting Hillary, along with Bernie but as more of a stop-gap measure. I don't expect much more from her than that but I remain hopeful that she will surprise me.

Those who left, and formed JPR. were not driven out by intolerance nor meanness, they were trash and bash posters, trolls, trouble makers and only wanted to bash president Obama, the Democratic party, and anyone here who did not agree with their overly radical view point. Pit made and ass out of himself many times here on DU, and calling present Obama a "piece of shit used care salesman" pretty much showed the ass he really was.

What gets me is all those who come back here from the cesspool they call JPR, and keep string up things. It's obvious they only want to cause problems, nothing else. If you like Pitt so much I am sure they would love to have you over on JPR, unless you are already one of them.

A word from William Rivers Pitt

Dear friends:

If I get another admonishing finger wagged in my face – just one – along the lines of “What, you want a President Trump,” there will be asses kicked sideways in all directions. I’ve had it.

I WARNED YOU about what a vulnerable bad-idea candidate Clinton is. But no, she’s the fucking Anointed One, the only one that can win until she fucking loses. By all rights, she should be 25 points ahead of Trump across the board, but she’s not, because she’s a fucking terrible candidate and you know it. She’s got more baggage than Samsonite.

So I’m supposed to take a blade to my own conscience and vomit up a vote for her because of your bad decision-making? Fucking hell with that. You bought it, you ride it, all the way to the end. A god damned ham sandwich could beat Trump in a general election. You went and picked the one human who could actually blow it, and now that’s on me?

Fuck and that. I will vote my conscience in November – and yeah, if it’s close, that will factor in – but if I get another half-assed “Yeah but” lecture, you’re gonna get banhammered so fast you’ll be gone before you know you had an accident. She’s your candidate. Live with the fucking pain.

If she can’t beat FUCKING DONALD TRUMP, she has no business in the race to begin with. I’m not here to haul your water or paper over your mistakes. You had other options, and you fucked it up. Don’t put that on me.

Or threaten to murder DUers, or rape them, or call Obama a piece of shit? And is the darling of JPR and BoBers.

I do not get why people think he is still relevant to us in 2016. He isn't. He is a Jill Stein-level crank.

He used to be better than this. At this point if you deleted the cuss-words there wouldn't be much left -- and that's kind of tedious.

Just to be absolutely clear: I myself occasionally cuss on DU and IRL. But one after the other after another doesn't add up to coherent communication, just a temper tantrum.

Yet they all propose the same exact policies. More tax cuts for the ruling class, that whole administration should be in jail. Instead they are looked to as foreign policy experts to critique the current administration's foreign policy.

Is he also gong to cut the soles off his shoes and learn to play the flute?

Sorry, flashback to Firesign Theatre:

Take Dwarf {Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers}. Beginning with the Powerhouse Church rantings of Deacon Mouse on some late-night televangelist show, it becomes apparent that salvation is best found at the dinner table. George Tirebiter--a name nicked from the canine mascot of the USC Trojans--is asleep on the couch; he wakes up to an empty refrigerator, gets the munchies from watching an ad for Arnie’s Whole Beef Halves, can’t get a pizza delivered to his sector because it’s after curfew, flips around the dial and lands back on the televangelist channel. The deacon is touting “hot-buttered groat clusters,” Tirebiter commands the deacon to hand ’em over, and the deacon does--right through the television set.

Sated, Tirebiter starts flipping through the channels past a game show starring himself as an old man and commercials for Ersatz Bros. Coffee (mystery ingredient: Spanish fly) before landing on a vintage movie. It’s a parody of one of those 1930’s campus-hijinks films titled High School Madness, starring a couple of Mickey Rooneys named Porgie and Mudhead. Porgie, yet another incarnation of Tirebiter, is about to graduate. Sourpuss dad Adolf slaps him around at the breakfast table--“Don’t eat with your hands, son; use your entrenching tool,” he snarls--then Mudhead, a perennial goof-off who only wants to pick up girls, shows up to give Porgie a ride to the Morse Science High graduation ceremony. “With counter-subversive educational priorities the way they are, why, it really helps our side to re-enlist,” Porgie quotes Morse Science’s principal, a man named Poop, to Mudhead before adding that what he really wants to do is cut the soles off his shoes, sit in a tree and learn to play the flute.

Unfortunately, they arrive at a flagpole. “Holy Mudhead, mackerel!” Porgie exclaims. Morse Science High, it’s ... disappeared! Thus ends side one.

Mr. Pitt normally reserves his vective and nasty disrespect for President Obama.

Again - this doesn't gel with who he has shown us to be in the past. Besides wasn't this one of the folks that was always assuming the worst of Obama? Everything from he was going to end social security to spreading fracking everywhere?

I don't believe I've ever read anything where he respects President Obama's service to this country - and who he is as an individual.

So now he's trying to play all 'kissy face' - and come into the Democratic Party fold by 'defending' President Obama and SOS Clinton?

When he never has before . . . that I can recall?

My key item being: this is the writer who referred to President Obama as a "Piece of Shit Used Car Salesman".

People are different but for me? Pitt has shown me who he is, what he believes, and what I believe to be ill intent towards Democratic Politicians. I believe who he has shown himself to be.

So nope.

My statement stands.

This 'article' defending the virtue and honor of President Obama and SOS Clinton does not in any way make sense - as in the past - he's done nothing but take jabs at and tear them down.

Or - were there prior posts I've missed where he has written ANYTHING favorably about either one - that ALSO did not include a backhanded slap? Becuase even in those instances he writes 'something nice' to deliver a sucker punch the very next sentence.
