2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBC/BS Banner Health Hack of Patient Records
Just wanted to pass on the word that hackers are now actively accessing medical records of individuals. According to the letter I received, dated August 3, 2016, the breach occurred on June 17, 2016.
According to the company Kroll Breach, who is managing protection of patient records the FBI is currently investigating the hack.
The information at risk includes any debit/credit card payment for services, SSN and possibly patient medical records data. This is based on the letter I received advising me that Kroll is providing credit protection services, if I call to enroll. They claim it was only payment for food and beverage service that generated the letter.
The letter itself is a concern. If my data was hacked, why do I need to subscribe to data protection services? When I called the number listed in the letter they refused to give me the names of the affiliated companies involved. I did my own research.
Thank goodness, my data would not fund hackers huge appetites. There are potentially millions of users with medical coverage who may suffer now, or later. Our most vulnerable, the ill and elderly.
This is getting very personal. Its time for the US government and corporations to invest in their internet structure. They just do not consider data protection a priority.

(12,633 posts)only time I paid separately for food was with cash in the cafeteria, but the letter clearly states that my records were accessed. Perhaps the database for regular meal service provided to patients (which was excellent in my hospital, by the way) was hacked and that's where the "food and beverage" tagline came from.
I would urge you to re-read the letter and then go to the back and see the services Kroll is providing. You need not subscribe to all of them, but some may be of value to you.

(7,888 posts)My beef, why should I need to subscribe to protect my credit when I am visiting patients? I have nothing worthy of protection, other than my reputation. It is the duty of any corporation given payment for services to avoid this "situation" in the first place. imo
