Report: Clinton told FBI Powell advised use of private email

http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/19/politics/hillary-clinton-colin-powell-email/

(CNN) — Hillary Clinton told the FBI that her predecessor Colin Powell recommended that she use a private email account during her tenure as Secretary of State, according to a new report.

The New York Times reported on the revelation Thursday, based on notes from Clinton's interview with the FBI about her server that were delivered to Congress this week, and on a preview of a book about Bill Clinton's post-presidential years.

The notes from the FBI's interview with Clinton, conducted during its probe of the issue, reveal that she told investigators that Powell had advised her to use a private account.

Additionally, an excerpt from journalist Joe Conason's upcoming book on Bill Clinton, "Man of the World: The Further Endeavors of Bill Clinton," provides more detail.

2. No idea... most likely for CYA purposes. But as I understand it, there's a big difference between using a private email account (AOL) and using a private server.

Or, am i wrong on this? I mean at this point, what difference does it really make?... it's all "water under the bridge," as the sayin goes.

3. If anything, using an AOL account is worse

As it is subject to monitoring by AOL and probably less secure than a private server.

behavior.

Powell advised her to use a personal email account. That kindof kills the extraordinary out-of-bounds behavior charge.

As I have pointed out before... using a personal email account with a commercial email service provider means you are exposing your emails to possible examination by any of the large numbers of cyber-security personnel whose job it is to protect their employers system (i.e. servers) from hackers and malware. In order to do their job these people have the ability to examine any and all emails and attachments thereto on their system. Thus, if there was any classified data in any emails in such a commercial email account, nobody could say, with complete confidence, that the classified data was NOT compromised.

Clinton went the route of setting up her own server set up and managed by Government IT. What she had was a satellite Government server under the control of Government personnel. MUCH safer than the commercial email account where you KNOW the emails could be examined by any of a large number of cyber-security people. So the "extremely careless" charge is shot down.

AOL account for his non-classified state emails (which legally had the same status as her personal server -- neither one was a .gov account) -- he destroyed all his state emails when he left office and couldn't turn any over when State requested them.

Hillary, OTOH, turned all hers over upon request -- in the paper copies that the law required.

I'm a software engineer in cyber security field. The big difference between you having your own private server and using someone else's private server (every server is someone's server)

1. You may be sharing the server with other "tenants" when you use aol/google etc - they are not going to provision a separate machine per client. This is called "multi-tenancy"
2. You are reliant on the security and backup policies of the other server
3. if you have your own server and you have better security/backup policies your server is superior.
4. However if you have your own server, you can delete whatever you want without any trace - whereas if you use aol/google etc, then there will be some backup somewhere.
