Newsweek - "THE PRESSURE'S ON HILLARY CLINTON AT FIRST DEBATE, FAIR OR NOT"

Newsweek article says that suggests that so long as Trump does not come off completely unhinged, he wins. It does not matter if he totally ignorant of the issues and that his policy is a word salad.

Donald Trump has never participated in a one-on-one presidential debate. Hillary Clinton has been in 10 of them. Yet it’s Clinton, not Trump, who is under the most pressure when the two presidential candidates face off Monday night in New York. And analysts say her performance could have a real outcome on the trajectory of the race.

“As a woman, she’s judged by a standard that he’s not,” says Northwestern University Professor Craig Lamay, who co-wrote a book on the history of the presidential debates. “If he goes up and is just Mr. Bombast, well, does anybody expect anything different?" How Clinton handles Trump is “a much bigger challenge,” Lamay says, with viewers scrutinizing not just the substance of her words but her demeanor, as well. In other words, it’s the expectations game on steroids.

Both campaigns have already fired salvos on that front, trying to shape the lens through which people view their candidate’s performance. The Republican National Committee was particularly transparent in its aims in a memo it sent around Friday from Chief Strategist Sean Spicer asking, “Will Clinton Meet Expectations In The First Debate?” Spicer pointed out that “Clinton is a career politician who has spent years sharpening her debate reflexes and beefing up on public policy." Trump, however, “is new to the format. Aside from the primary debates...Trump’s lack of formal, political, one-on-one debate experience gives Clinton a significant advantage,” he argues.

The Clinton campaign tried to push back on that narrative in a conference call with reporters it hosted Friday afternoon, complaining that the press has set lower expectations for Trump. “Getting through a debate while maintaining your demeanor and not becoming unhinged should not be the standard,” argued Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri. She pleaded with the press to call Trump out for his consistent falsehoods. “Any candidate who tells this many lies clearly can’t win the debate on the merits,” she insisted.

and somehow she's the one who has to prove herself.

meanwhile, the dangerous, incompetent, idiotic, mentally unbalanced clown merely has to pretend to be remotely normal.

I don't know how to parse that except as "because she's a mere woman."

It's a little late for her to take up baton-twirling or biting the heads off bats. She should probably stick to what she knows, which is a fuck of a lot.

Tonight 100,000,000. people will see 2 people on stage. To win Hillary only has to prove that she is the most competent person to lead the country. This means she needs to be articulate and present a positive policy agenda for the future. This is really an opportunity for her to speak directly to the american people about all of the other issues facing america that have not been discussed. If anything, she needs to focus on a sincerity to making the country better. This is her bar for people to feel comfortable with her as president. If she can overcome the false narrative that has been placed on her even a little she will win votes.

At the end of the night the winner will not be the one that exceeded expectations it will be the one that 100,000,000 viewers, not the press or media, saw as a president. Think about it give anyone the choice between eating ice cream and brussels sprouts. Very few are going to taste both and pick the brussels sprouts because "they taste worst than the ice cream but not quite as bad as I thought they would.

I also don't think that in one debate Donald can change the narrative about himself. Even if he does a better job of holding is temper is anyone going to claim " The real Donald Trump showed up", ya that will last about 2 days until the next Trump Rally.

Just my thoughts. At the end of the day only one of the candidates is qualified to be president and it shows every time both speak and if Hillary can make this difference pronounced on stage she will win votes. She may never win the pundits and the media

Hillary does. How on Earth does that benefit Drumpf.

So what if he hasn't had a one-on-one debate? Presidents don't get to choose who they have to debate with or negotiate with.

This is not an even that can be judged based on the experience of the candidates in debates. They're running for President, for jebus' sake.
