When I joined DU during its first year Palm Springs was a much more conservative city, run down and living on past glory. Since then there has been an influx of new residents -- most of them liberals -- that has revitalized the city. I should probably change my logon name, but then I'd lose the number of posts, and I'm a proud member of this website since its beginning.

I was wondering about your name ...."last liberal?" Seemed to be quite a few there.

When I moved here when Bush II became president (and DU began) it was still a snowbird town, and they tended to be somewhat more conservative than the present crowd. Summers were dead -- the entire town closed down. Starting in the late 90s the "White Party" and the Palm Springs Film Festival were held here and the quaint nature of P.S. started drawing more artistic and liberal type people who live here year-round. T-shirt shops have been replaced by upscale boutiques, there are a lot of really nice restaurants, and there are at least 100 upscale small motels. A couple of years ago the city elected a lesbian as mayor, which I thought marked the end of my "conservative" thoughts about the nature of the town.

Like I said, my DU name is outdated. I'd change it to PSLiberal or something like that if they'd let us (DU allowed a name change about 10 years ago without losing your posts number). Until then I'll stick with the one I've got.
