If you were alive during the Berlin Wall era you remember the walls didn't work - but the machine gun towers every 50 yards, search lights, guard dogs, barbed wire, and land mines were quite effective. Especially the machine gun towers... BTW - the walls were to keep people in East Germany, not out of West Germany. That's right the guns were turned on the people inside East Germany, no shots were fired into West Germany - that would have been an act of war.
