2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumYou hate pence. I hate pence.
But the media has been anointing him as the cleanest, most qualified republican ever. Democrats are only attacking him for his siding with Trump. He is being painted as statesmanlike.
If the tape makes trump resign, and pence runs, we are miles behind in letting the country know how bad mikey is. 30 days to vet him to the public. He will have millions from the kochs, and the media is several weeks away from losing their crush on him. The public knows only what the media have told them after the VP debate.
Just when it looked like we might squeak it out.

(11,123 posts)it will be hard to turn Texas blue. North Texas, West Texas -- papered with trumpence signs.
But. You're the optimist. I'm the pessimist.

(27,787 posts)First Trump pulling out does not immediately make Pence the Presidential nominee. He never even ran in the Primary.

(11,123 posts)He's at least as "smart" as w. bush and the kochs love him.
That's why I said you and I hate him, but we hated bush too.
But I see where others have legitimately attacked my premise and my pessimism with the fact that early voting has already started.

(19,982 posts)his anti-women stance will kill him in any future national election.

Jakes Progress
(11,123 posts)But I worry that the media would take until the election to slow down their current path of building him up so that there is more drama and conflict which equals more ratings.
It appears that trump's ego is going to save us. He won't step down. In my pessimistic fever I envisioned the rnc promising him no taxes or something to get him to quit.

(19,982 posts)crashing event on Hillary's side would change things. We don't want him to step down though....he's like an albatross around the Republican neck ! The personal humiliation would probably be too much for him. That said, I think he is going to go after Hillary and Bill tomorrow night. If he does, and wins, watch the GOP rally round like the rats they are.

Does the stand by Trump's bragging about sexual assault? Or does he knife his own nominee?

Umm, what? Your entire OP reeks of anything but "progress."
Even if Trump did drop out (he can't resign from a job he never had), Pence would be destroyed by the scandal as well. He just went on national TV 3 days ago and said that Donald Trump's words are misconstrued and misunderstood. The only people misunderstanding this one are the 35% of the country that will NEVER vote Democrat even if the Republican was Joseph Stalin and the Democrat was Ayn Rand. It's all about the D or R for them.
But, the fact of the matter is, Trump or no Trump, the GOP has lost the 2016 Presidential Election barring a MASSIVE scandal on Hillary.

(599 posts)And it'd have to be through a convention or a committee established by GOP (yeah, I looked it up a few months ago).
And can you imagine the implosion of the Mandarin Comb-Over Candidate if the GOP starts discussing replacing him? His ego wouldn't be able to handle it.

(32,766 posts)But if I'm being honest, he should be forced to step down because our country really deserves better than a vulgar, unqualified misogynist with mental issues.
Of course, that leaves Pence. Not good. He's an extreme right winger. What an awkward situation!

(22,871 posts)the spotlight,he's a narcissist. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's Pence that jumps ship. The Trump brand will take Pence down and he's got to be getting scared. Nobody needs the right wing, evangelical vote like Pence does and he might be ready to cut his losses.

Sorry if thinking bothers you. Go on with your blind, cock-eyed optimism. I'm sure that you felt the same feelings for the Gore and Kerry elections. That's okay though. We need jolly elves. Just don't get all twisted if some of the more pessimistic of the party actually try to avoid catastrophes that would take the shiny away.

(15,951 posts)I think that should disqualify him right there--along with the fact that he is Trump's hand picked nominee--a further taint, imo.
DefenseLawyer
(11,101 posts)Yes he has the talk show host gift of gab and can spout meaningless cliches, but he's really stupid. In a full campaign season he would be done in by his first serious interview. (Go back and look at his train wreck interview with George Stephanopoulos after his Religious Freedom bill disaster in Indiana). You're right though, the problem is there isn't enough time and he could conceivably coast into the election without answering a single live question.
Jakes Progress
(11,123 posts)Even worse would be a ryan/pence ticket. That's what the rnc is dreaming of right now. Everyone says it is too late, but the later the better for the republicans. Neither ryan nor pence could beat Hillary in a full campaign, but both are riding the wave of love from the media right now.
Sure I'm the pessimist, but people shouldn't think the rnc will be concerned with rules or doing things according to code. They can convene something like 168 people and completely rewrite the rules. Those who are cheering will lose by thinking that the rules will keep the republicans from cheating and getting away with it. They don't give a shit about the country or they never would have let trump in in the first place.
Pence is surely a fence post when it comes to thinking, but so was bush 2 and so was reagan. republicans like 'em dumb.
