JOHNSTOWN, Pa. In the same arena where the 1977 film Slap Shot once satirized the violence of hockey, Republican Donald Trump gave a typically bare-fisted speech Friday, taking on his rivals, the media and President Barack Obama.
The world hates our president. The world hates us, said Trump before a crowd of at least 4,000 people at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
He decried trade deals and public officials and U.S. policy in the Middle East. We have spent now $6 trillion in the Middle East, and we are in far worse shape than we were 15 years ago, he said, calling the situation there a total and complete mess.
Trump sprinkled references to Johnstown, which he called one of the great places on Earth, in his 45-minute speech. He name-dropped once-mighty businesses such as the Cambria Iron Works and Bethlehem Steel. But for the most part, his speech revisited familiar themes like blaming trade deals for the decline in American manufacturing jobs and characterizing Syrian refugees as the great Trojan horse of our era while only occasionally offering specifics.

(15,368 posts)I had visitors and we streamed the third debate via TouTube here on Thursday morning before they left via train for Italy! They have been in Europe for the past two weeks and everyone at home is telling them that they are SO lucky to be away from the nonstop US election coverage. But they did want to see the debate ... and our appreciation of Hillary's grace and poise throughout.
This year in Geneva for the FIRST time ever, ALL the US expat organizations - including those of BOTH major political parties - will be having a watch party TOGETHER on election night. NO expat I know - whatever their stated political persuasion - wants to see a Trump victory.
Hillary has already made us stronger together!

In Geneva, wow! How Cool is that? Will you be there?

(15,368 posts)I took advantage of the early bird prices.
They won't announce the actual venue until early in November when they have a better count of attendees. There will also be several private watch parties as well. But even non-US citizens are invited to the big bash, so it should be quite interesting to be there.
My guests and I took advantage of some special Swiss rail fares to travel around the country. There are quite a few English speakers here so no one automatically assumed that we were US citizens. But if anyone asked, we always said "yes." (I did so even during the Bush II years ... just to show that there were LOTS of US citizens who intensely disliked - even hated - the policies of that administration.)
Of course, the first comments from anyone who learned that we were US citizens were generally about the election. People here are following it very closely. Most already believe that our elections are insane when campaigns begin more than a YEAR ahead of time and everything is so poll-driven.
But this year, the insanity meter is off the charts and many in Europe are VERY worried about ANY possibility of a Trump win - which is looking less and less likely, thank heavens! They have their own fascist political parties here, A Trump victory - or even a close loss - would enable and encourage them.
The Brexit vote result already has.

which ones are you most going to enjoy finally having to admit that ALL IS LOST!
and how long before they do?
hope they'll be like Rove in 2012 and refuse to enter the world of the real until after it's become obvious that they have as much to win as a spermatocyte does of becoming a human being.
then again....

(7,596 posts)I'm glad Rudy Giuliani has ruined any sort of positive reputation he had left. That "America's Mayor" bullshit is now a thing of the past. He'll be remembered for the rest of his life as Trump's repulsive sidekick. Good

US was -12% unfavorable when Obama took over. US is +9% favorable now.

George Bush and Cheney GOP foreign policy took America from +47 to as low as -18. Obama has turned that around and got it heading in the right direction. Some of the damage Bush & the GOP did to the perception of the US in the world will last for generations. But that's not Obama's fault. All he's largely done is help repair the perception.
As usual, Trump thinks with his intestines except when he's groping where the head on the end of his dick takes over.
