(4,667 posts)Here are the two term party presidencies of the last 50 years. Look at how badly the majority of them turned out for the ruling party.
1952-1960 Eisenhower (Nixon attempts win a 3rd term for the GOP. He loses a close election to Kennedy.)
1960-1968-LBJ/JFK ( (JFK assassinated in 1963. LBJ does not seek a second term. Low approval ratings. Vietnam War is out of control)
1968-1976-Nixon/Ford (Nixon is impeached from office. Ford seeks re-election but loses to Carter)
1980-1988- Reagan (Reagan has a 51% Gallup approval rating in October 1988. Bush is elected. GOP holds WH for 12 years.
1992-2000-Clinton (Clinton has a 57% Gallup approval rating. But he is dogged by impeachment and Monica scandal. Dems lose WH in close election.
2000-2008-Bush (Bush loses a major city to a flood/Katrina 2006. Two wars escalate out of control. Economy collapses. Bush's Gallup approval rating is 27%. GOP loses WH.
2008-2016 Obama (Obama has a 57% Gallup approval rating. Dems hold WH for 3rd term.)
Only 3 Presidents in American history have served more than 2 terms in office and have had their party hold the WH for a 3rd term.
